Best Express Medals Award Plaques in 2026

Material Integrity and Durability

The foundation of any high-quality plaque is the substrate. For medal awards, the material must be capable of supporting the physical weight of metal medals without warping or bowing over time. Wood is the most traditional and versatile choice. Look for solid hardwoods like walnut, cherry, or mahogany if you want a premium, heirloom feel. If you are working with a tighter budget or need lightweight options for large-scale events, high-density engineered wood or composite materials can provide a smooth surface for engraving while remaining cost-effective. Avoid thin veneers that may peel at the edges when the weight of heavy medals is applied to the mounting points.

Mounting Mechanisms and Medal Security

A common mistake in selecting award plaques is overlooking how the medals actually attach to the surface. There are three primary methods: direct screw-mounting, ribbon loops, or recessed slots. Direct mounting involves screwing the medal directly into the wood, which provides the most security but can damage the medal if not done carefully. Ribbon loops or integrated hooks are often preferred for 'express' awards because they allow the recipient to easily swap out medals or adjust the drape of the ribbon. When browsing, check if the plaque includes pre-drilled holes or dedicated hardware, as this saves significant time during the assembly phase of an awards ceremony.

Aesthetics: Metal Accents and Engraving Styles

To elevate a simple wooden board into a professional award, pay close attention to the metal accents. Brass or gold-toned plates are the industry standard for a reason—they provide a high-contrast background that makes black or white engraving pop. Consider the 'visual weight' of the plaque. A heavy, dark wood paired with a polished gold plate screams prestige, whereas a light oak with silver accents feels more modern and casual. Furthermore, consider the engraving method. Laser engraving offers intricate detail for complex logos, while traditional metal plate etching provides a classic, tactile depth that resists fading over decades.

Scale and Display Orientation

Before finalizing your purchase, determine where the award will live. If the plaque is intended for a trophy case, a smaller, compact design is ideal. If it is meant for a boardroom wall, a larger format with significant 'negative space' around the medals will prevent the display from looking cluttered. Always consider the orientation—horizontal plaques are better suited for desks or mantels, while vertical plaques are the standard for wall mounting. A well-proportioned plaque should have enough room to accommodate the medal's diameter plus the length of its ribbon without looking cramped.

Recommendation Logic

When choosing, follow this hierarchy of needs: First, prioritize weight capacity (can it hold the medals?). Second, prioritize the occasion (is it formal or casual?). Third, prioritize the engraving surface (is there enough room for the recipient's name and the achievement?). For high-stakes corporate recognition, lean toward solid wood and brass. For athletic or youth achievements, prioritize durability and ease of ribbon mounting.
