Best 3 Board Games in 2026

Backgammon on the road usually turns into a mess of sliding checkers and dice rolling under the seat. This Yellow Mountain Imports set heads that off with a stitch-bound leatherette case that zips shut at 9 inches and opens to a 14 x 9 inch velour playing field. The magnetic checkers stay put through turbulence, train jolts, and cramped café tables, and the black-and-white leatherette pips keep the points easy to read. Inside you get 30 checkers, four dice, a doubling cube, and two leatherette cups, each checker just 0.7 inches across. The deep sea green and beige scheme looks sharper than the price suggests, and it all folds into something that fits a carry-on.

Most portable backgammon kits feature flimsy boards and slidey checkers spilling in to the dice cups but the Bozcaada eliminates this problem altogether by providing a magnetic velour playing surface. The magnetic surface allows all 30 checkers to stay firmly in place on the board. The Yellow Mountain Imports version has stitch-bound leatherette case that zips closed for travel and is 9.3" x 7" x 2" in size. That makes it easy to pack away in carry on luggage or the glovebox. The board opens up to a proper 14" x 9.3" for playing. The kit includes 2 sets of magnetic checkers (15 ea.), 4 dice, doubling cube and 2 leatherette cups. There's a variety of storage compartments to keep everything organized for the next game. A thoughtful purchase for the frequent traveler or a discrete way to build math and probability into family trips. It's not a novelty purchase.

Yellow Mountain Imports packs two complete Xiangqi sets into this bundle, and each one folds down to a slim 9.4 x 9.5 x 0.9 inch case that slips into a backpack or glovebox without complaint. The magnets are the real story here: 32 pieces per set, held firmly enough that a bumpy bus ride or a breezy park table won't send your chariots sliding. Pieces come in red-and-white and black-and-white pairs, each about 0.9 inches across, and they store neatly inside the folded board when you're done. At roughly a pound per set, it's genuinely portable without feeling flimsy. The board surface is compact, so expect tight quarters rather than a tournament-sized grid, but for learning the rules or squeezing in a game while traveling, it does the job well. Kids pick it up quickly too.

Bamboo makes a surprisingly good Go board, and this Yellow Mountain Imports set proves it — solid strips sanded smooth, with a full 19x19 grid and 15mm squares that feel dense and reassuring underfoot. The two pull-out drawers are the real star. No more rattling stones loose in a plastic bag between games. You get 181 black and 180 white double-convex melamine stones with a satisfying click, plus The Way to Go booklet that walks beginners through rules and basic strategy without talking down to them. At 5.3 pounds it's portable enough for a coffee table or a park bench, and it stays stable once set down. Great gift for anyone curious about Go.

Two of the world's oldest strategy games now fit in a backpack. Yellow Mountain Imports bundles a magnetic 19x19 Go set with a magnetic Xiangqi board, and the magnets are the real story here — stones and pieces stay put on a train tray table, a park bench, or any surface that refuses to sit flat. Both boards fold in half and hide their pieces inside, so there's no loose-stone scramble at the bottom of your bag. The Xiangqi pieces carry traditional characters in a jade-like finish, while the Go set supplies single convex black and white stones in their own bowls. At 11 and 12.8 inches, these boards stay comfortably playable rather than cramped.

Shogi on the road is entirely doable with this compact magnetic set from Yellow Mountain Imports. Everything needed to play Japanese Chess fits into a 9.6-inch folding board that weighs under a pound, so it slips into a backpack or carry-on without a second thought. The magnets are the real story: pieces stay put through bumpy train rides and jostling cafe tables, which is exactly where travel sets usually fail. You get the full 40-piece roster — pawns, lances, knights, silver and gold generals, bishops, rooks, and kings — sized to feel proportional on the board. A full English illustrated manual covers the rules for newcomers, and the whole thing runs about fifteen dollars. Genuinely worth it for anyone curious about shogi.

The Hcusus magnetic string game has earned a permanent spot on our coffee table, and it gets pulled out more than any deck of cards we own. Setup takes about ten seconds, and the adjustable ropes let you shrink the play area when you want a genuine challenge. Matches wrap up in roughly five minutes, so nobody sits around waiting, and the two-player format stays tense without turning into a shouting match. Kids around eight pick it up fine, but adults get just as competitive. The drawstring bag makes it easy to toss in a backpack for travel, camping, or a classroom reward. At this price, it's an easy gift to keep on hand.

A reversible bamboo goban is the smartest way to buy into Go, and Yellow Mountain Imports gets the formula right. One side offers the full 19x19 grid for standard play. Flip it over and the 13x13 field is ideal for drilling fundamentals or squeezing in a quick game. Pressed from solid strips of bamboo, the board feels warmer and lighter than a budget MDF slab, and the included felt sleeve keeps it protected and steady. The 361 melamine stones have a satisfying heft and stack neatly, while the two bamboo bowls — with hook-and-loop straps and a vinyl case — make storage and travel genuinely painless. Karl Baker's beginner booklet rounds out a serious, complete setup for newcomers and casual club players alike.

Yellow Mountain Imports has squeezed a genuinely playable game of backgammon into a 9-inch leatherette case, and the result is one of those travel sets that actually earns its spot in a carry-on. The stitch-bound board folds in half, zips shut, and holds every piece inside, so nothing rattles loose in your bag. Magnetic checkers grip the velour playing field, which means a bumpy train ride or a gusty patio table won't send your pieces skittering. You get two sets of 15 checkers, four dice, a doubling cube, and two leatherette dice cups. The black-and-orange pips make the board easy to read, and the built-in organizational sections keep everything tidy between games.

Nobody wins Round the Mountain alone, and that's exactly why kids ask for it again and again. Everyone climbs aboard the same team, rolling the chunky wooden die and sliding the wooden train along the mountain track — it clicks as it travels, and peeking underneath reveals the color you rolled. Collect sparkling gems, watch for falling rocks, and fill your mining carts together before the mountain wins. The rules are picture-based, so preschoolers can jump in without a single word of reading, and a full game wraps up in about 15 minutes. It quietly teaches color matching, turn-taking, and fine motor control while feeling like pure play.

The wood inlay on this backgammon set is the kind of detail you notice the moment you unfold it. Yellow Mountain Imports packs real craftsmanship into a 13-inch frame that folds in half and holds everything inside — checkers, dice, doubling cube, and two wooden cups. Hidden inset magnets keep the case closed at 13 x 8.25 x 2 inches, so it slides onto a shelf or into a bag without a fuss. The playing field is elegantly laid out with inlaid pips and dedicated spots for the pieces, and the two sets of 15 checkers feel substantial at 1 x 0.25 inch. New players and seasoned regulars alike will find it a pleasure to play, at home or on the go.

Yellow Mountain Imports solved the classic travel-game problem with this folding Xiangqi set: the magnets actually hold. Pieces stay planted on the board whether you're on a bumpy train, a picnic blanket, or a cramped airplane tray, so a game doesn't dissolve the moment someone nudges the table. The jade-colored pieces with red and white characters feel substantial in hand, and the golden grid with its chariot motifs gives the board a quietly handsome look. Everything packs down to 12.8 inches and stores inside the board itself, all 2.2 pounds of it. Beginners and seasoned players alike get a genuinely portable way to sharpen strategic thinking.

Chinese chess on the go just got a whole lot easier. This folding board from Yellow Mountain Imports measures 14.6 inches across and uses built-in magnets to keep all 32 acrylic pieces firmly in place — no more sliding pieces or lost games on bumpy train rides. The black pieces are carved with vibrant red and green characters, and they tuck neatly inside the board when you're done. At 2.2 pounds, the whole set is light enough to carry anywhere, and the golden grid with decorative chariot designs adds a classic touch. Whether you're a seasoned Xiangqi player or teaching a kid the basics, this set delivers deep strategy without the hassle.
