A Guide to Selecting the Best fortlocks combination locks
Determine Your Primary Application
The first step in selecting a combination lock is identifying exactly what you are securing. The mechanical requirements for a locker padlock are vastly different from those of a heavy-duty gate lock or a high-security briefcase lock. For school or gym use, you should prioritize ease of use and a compact design that won't snag on bags. However, if you are securing outdoor equipment or storage sheds, you must look for weather-resistant features. A lock intended for indoor use may fail prematurely if exposed to moisture, salt air, or extreme temperature fluctuations, leading to jammed dials or corroded internal components.
Evaluate the Locking Mechanism
Combination locks generally fall into two categories: rotary dials and multi-wheel digit systems. Rotary dials are often perceived as more traditional and can offer a higher level of security against certain types of manipulation, but they can be slower to operate. Multi-wheel systems, which use a series of rotating discs, are much faster for quick access—making them ideal for high-traffic environments like fitness centers. When evaluating these, pay close attention to the 'feel' of the mechanism. A high-quality lock should have smooth, consistent movement without excessive play or wobbling, which can indicate a lower-quality internal build that might be susceptible to shimming or picking.
Material Integrity and Build Quality
The physical construction of the lock is your first line of defense against brute-force attacks. Look for hard steel or heavy-duty zinc alloy housings. For maximum security, pay attention to the shackle—the U-shaped metal bar. A thick, hardened steel shackle is significantly more difficult to cut with bolt cutters than a standard steel one. Furthermore, consider the coating of the lock. Powder-coated or laminated finishes provide an extra layer of protection against rust and scratches, which is essential if the lock will be handled frequently or kept in a damp environment.
Security Ratings and Complexity
While most consumer-grade combination locks do not carry official high-level security certifications, you can gauge security by the number of possible combinations. A 3-digit lock offers significantly less protection than a 4-digit or 5-digit version. The more digits involved, the higher the mathematical difficulty for someone attempting to guess the code. Additionally, consider the 'reset' functionality. Some locks allow you to change the combination easily, while others require a specific procedure. For maximum security, choose a model that allows for easy code changes so you can update your security regularly.
Ease of Use vs. Security Trade-offs
There is often a direct correlation between how easy a lock is to use and how secure it is. Extremely simple locks with large, chunky wheels are great for children or elderly users but may be easier to bypass. Conversely, highly complex locks with many moving parts might offer superior security but can become frustrating to use in a hurry. Aim for a balance: a lock with tactile feedback (such as distinct clicks when the correct number is reached) provides the best user experience while maintaining a high standard of mechanical integrity.

Quick answers about Fortlocks Combination Locks before you buy.
Security depends on the mechanism, but combination locks eliminate the risk of losing a physical key. However, high-quality disc detainer or heavy-duty steel combination locks are necessary to prevent picking or shimming.
Consider the shackle diameter and length. For gym lockers, a standard thin shackle works well, but for outdoor gates or heavy equipment, look for a hardened steel shackle with a larger diameter to resist bolt cutters.
Only if they are specifically rated for weather resistance. Look for models with corrosion-resistant coatings and weather-sealed dials to prevent rust and freezing in cold climates.
Rotary dials require a specific sequence of turns and are common on heavy-duty safes, whereas number wheels (scrolling wheels) are more common for portable locks due to their compact, user-friendly design.
Keep the mechanism clean and free of debris. For outdoor use, avoid using heavy oils that attract dust. Instead, use a dry graphite lubricant to ensure the internal tumblers move smoothly.
Most resettable models allow you to change the code in seconds, but you must follow a specific sequence while the lock is open. Always test the new code before closing the shackle for the first time.
Look for features like ball-bearing locking mechanisms and hardened steel construction. High-end models often include anti-pick or anti-shim technology within the internal cylinder.
