Spanning 72 feet across two strands, this setup provides ample coverage for large patios or garden pergolas. The 24 hanging sockets come paired with 30 vintage S14 incandescent bulbs, giving you six convenient spares if a bulb ever fails. I particularly like that these are ETL listed and designed to withstand harsh elements like snow and heavy rain without losing their integrity. The most critical decision in selecting deck lighting is how the units will receive power. Solar-powered options are the gold standard for DIY enthusiasts because they require zero electrical wiring and can be installed in minutes. These are ideal for renters or those with decks that lack integrated electrical outlets. However, solar lights are dependent on sunlight exposure. If your deck is heavily shaded by trees or the house itself, the brightness and duration of the light will suffer. On the other hand, hardwired or plug-in LED options offer consistent, high-lumen output regardless of the weather or time of day, but they require a more permanent installation process involving electrical knowledge or professional help.
Evaluate IP Ratings and Weatherproofing
Because deck lights are exposed to rain, snow, humidity, and temperature fluctuations, durability is non-negotiable. When browsing this category, look specifically for a high Ingress Protection (IP) rating. An IP65 rating or higher is recommended for outdoor deck lighting, ensuring the internal components are protected against dust and water jets. Cheaply made lights often fail at the seal where the lens meets the housing. Look for units that utilize high-quality stainless steel or heavy-duty ABS plastic to prevent corrosion and UV degradation, which can cause the light to become brittle and crack over time.
Light Temperature and Aesthetic Integration
The 'feel' of your deck is dictated by the color temperature of the LEDs. For a cozy, lounge-like atmosphere, prioritize 'Warm White' light (typically between 2700K and 3000K). This mimics the glow of a sunset and is much more flattering for social gatherings. If you are using the lights primarily for task lighting—such as illuminating a path for safety—a slightly cooler white might be more effective, though it can sometimes feel clinical in a residential setting. Additionally, consider the mounting style: recessed lights provide a sleek, modern look that sits flush with the wood, while surface-mounted lights are easier to install and offer a more traditional aesthetic.
Beam Spread and Placement Strategy
Don't just buy lights based on how bright they are. Consider how they cast light. Spotlights are excellent for highlighting specific architectural features or plants, while diffused, wide-angle lights are better for general perimeter illumination. For staircases, look for lights that provide a downward-facing beam to minimize glare while maximizing visibility on the treads. A common mistake is over-lighting a space, which can ruin the ambiance and create harsh shadows. Instead, aim for a layered approach: use low-profile step lights for safety and subtle accent lights along the railing to create depth and dimension.

Quick answers about Addlon Deck Lights before you buy.
Solar lights are easy to install and require no wiring, making them ideal for DIY projects, but they rely on sunlight. Hardwired lights offer consistent, brighter illumination and can be integrated into your home's electrical system for permanent use.
For subtle ambiance and path lighting, look for lower lumen outputs. If you intend to use the deck for reading or detailed tasks, opt for higher lumen fixtures that provide functional task lighting.
Yes. Since deck lights are exposed to rain, snow, and humidity, ensure they have a high IP (Ingress Protection) rating, such as IP65 or higher, to prevent electrical failure and corrosion.
Absolutely. Many modern deck lighting options are compatible with smart home ecosystems, allowing you to control brightness, color temperature, and schedules via smartphone or voice commands.
Look for corrosion-resistant materials like stainless steel, heavy-duty aluminum, or high-grade polycarbonate. These materials withstand UV exposure and moisture much better than cheap plastics.
Consider the function: use stair lights for safety, post cap lights for perimeter definition, and recessed riser lights to highlight architectural features and prevent tripping.
Solar lights require direct sunlight to charge effectively. If your deck is heavily shaded by trees or the house, hardwired or battery-operated options will be more reliable.
Warm white (2700K–3000K) is generally preferred for decks as it creates a cozy, inviting atmosphere. Cool white can feel too clinical for a relaxing outdoor living space.
