The Soar Forge DND Dice Tray is a masterclass in tabletop luxury, defined by its stunning embossed Ouroboros Dragon and Celtic Triquetra design. I was immediately impressed by how the soft, non-abrasive interior transforms a chaotic dice roll into a quiet, smooth experience reminiscent of a high-end casino table. It does more than just muffle the sound. The high walls prevent expensive dice from flying onto the floor, while the lid doubles as a secondary rolling surface for extra players. With a staging area that holds five sets of polyhedral dice and a magnetic closure that keeps your entire collection secure, this isn't just a tray—it's a portable treasure trove for any serious dice goblin looking to protect their investment.
The most critical factor in a dice tray is the interior lining. The goal is to provide a soft landing that prevents chips in resin or acrylic dice while ensuring the dice don't 'stick' to the surface. Velvet is a classic choice, offering a luxurious feel and excellent sound dampening, though it can trap dust and hair over time. Faux leather or high-quality microfiber provides a more modern, sleek aesthetic and is often easier to clean with a quick wipe. For those who prefer a rugged, tactile feel, heavy-duty canvas or felted wool is excellent for wargaming, where heavy metal dice might be more common. Always check that the lining is securely glued to the base to prevent bubbling or peeling during intense sessions.
Portability vs. Stability
Your choice should depend heavily on where you play. If you primarily host game nights at your own dining table, a larger, heavier tray made of wood or thick leather will provide the stability needed to prevent the tray from sliding when a heavy d20 hits the bottom. However, if you are a frequent traveler or play in crowded local game stores, portability is paramount. Look for folding trays, roll-up mats, or lightweight collapsible designs that can slip easily into a backpack or dice bag. A tray that is too bulky for your travel kit will eventually end up staying at home, defeating its purpose.
Size and Depth Considerations
One of the most common mistakes is purchasing a tray that is too shallow. A shallow tray might look elegant, but if you are rolling high-impact dice or using large, oversized polyhedrals, the dice can easily bounce out of the perimeter. You want a tray with sufficient depth—ideally at least one inch—to contain the kinetic energy of the roll. Furthermore, consider the size of your dice collection. If you use large d100s or heavy metal sets, a small, cramped tray will make rolling feel restricted and frustrating. Measure your largest die and ensure the tray provides ample 'runway' for it to tumble naturally.
Aesthetic Integration and Durability
Dice trays are often a centerpiece of a gamer's setup. If you enjoy a high-fantasy aesthetic, hand-tooled leather or dark wood trays can enhance the immersion of your roleplaying sessions. Conversely, if you prefer a minimalist or sci-fi look, sleek silicone or geometric fabric trays might be more appropriate. Beyond looks, consider the durability of the outer shell. A wooden frame is sturdy but can be heavy, while a leatherette exterior offers a balance of durability and weight. Ensure the edges are reinforced. The rim of the tray takes the most abuse from repeated rolling and being tossed into bags.
Recommendation Logic
When deciding, follow this hierarchy: First, define your primary environment (Home vs. Travel). Second, identify your dice type (Standard Resin vs. Heavy Metal). If you use metal dice, prioritize depth and a heavy base. If you are a traveler, prioritize a roll-up design. Finally, match the material to your cleaning habits—microfiber for low maintenance, or velvet for maximum sound dampening.

Dice trays provide a padded surface that muffles the loud clatter of dice, prevents them from bouncing off the table, and protects your tabletop from scratches and impact damage.
Leather offers a premium, durable feel and ages beautifully, while fabric or felt linings provide a softer landing for high-end resin or gemstone dice to prevent chipping.
If you primarily roll standard d6 or d20 dice, a small tray is sufficient. However, if you use oversized heavy metal dice or play with large groups, a wider tray prevents dice from jumping out during high-stakes rolls.
Yes, if you value aesthetics and longevity. Wooden trays act as centerpiece decor for your gaming setup and are much more durable than collapsible fabric versions.
For portability, look for collapsible silicone or fabric trays that fold flat. Rigid wooden or heavy leather trays are better suited for stationary home gaming sessions.
Absolutely. The primary function of a tray is to absorb the kinetic energy of a roll, which significantly reduces the risk of micro-fractures in resin dice or dents in metal dice.
For leather, use a damp cloth and specialized leather conditioner. For fabric or felt linings, a light vacuuming or a gentle spot clean with mild soap is usually enough to remove dust and debris.
