A Guide to Selecting the Best Westside Discs Disc Golf Drivers
Understanding Flight Ratings and Stability
The foundation of choosing any Westside driver lies in understanding the four-number flight rating system: Speed, Glide, Turn, and Fade. For drivers, the 'Speed' rating is the most critical starting point. A higher speed rating indicates a sharper, more aerodynamic rim designed to slice through the air, but it requires significant arm speed to keep the disc from stalling out too early. If you are a beginner or a recreational player, chasing high-speed drivers will often result in a disc that dives hard to the left (for right-handed backhand throwers) almost immediately. Look for mid-range speeds if you want more control, and save the high-speed stability for when your velocity increases.
The Spectrum of Stability: From Understable to Overstable
Westside Discs offers a diverse range of stability profiles. An 'understable' driver will want to drift to the right (for RHBH) and is excellent for players struggling to get distance or those playing into a headwind. These are great for learning how to manage hyzer angles. Conversely, an 'overstable' driver is the workhorse for windy conditions and aggressive, aggressive shots. Overstable drivers resist turning over and instead fight to return to a hard fade. If you find your current discs are 'flipping over' and crashing into the ground, you need to move toward the more overstable end of the Westside spectrum. Finding the 'neutral' sweet spot is often the goal for intermediate players looking to master straight, piercing lines.
Plastic Selection: Durability vs. Grip
One of the standout features of the Westside ecosystem is their specialized plastic blends. When selecting a driver, you must decide how you want the disc to age. Some plastic types are designed to be incredibly durable, maintaining their flight characteristics for hundreds of rounds without getting beat up. Others are designed to be 'grippy,' providing better tactile control during the release, which is vital for high-speed drivers where a slip can ruin a shot. Keep in mind that as a driver gets more 'beat in' or worn, its stability will change—typically becoming more understable. If you prefer a consistent flight, opt for their most premium, durable blends.
Matching Drivers to Your Skill Level
The most common mistake in disc golf is buying a driver that is too fast for your current skill level. A professional-grade driver might look impressive, but if it lacks the velocity to sustain its flight, it becomes a liability rather than an asset. We recommend a tiered approach: start with high-glide, moderate-speed drivers that allow you to practice accuracy. As your form stabilizes and your distance increases, introduce higher-speed drivers with more aggressive fade profiles. This progression ensures that every new addition to your bag serves a specific tactical purpose on the course.

Quick answers about Westside Discs Disc Golf Flying Discs before you buy.
Westside is known for unique plastic blends like ESP and Neutron, which offer distinct grip textures and durability profiles tailored to specific flight characteristics.
Look for fairway drivers with moderate stability and lower speeds. These allow for easier release and more predictable flight paths while you develop your form.
High-speed drivers are designed for distance and require significant arm speed, whereas low-speed drivers are more controlled and easier to manipulate for accuracy.
Stable drivers resist turning over and fly straighter, making them great for wind. Understable drivers turn to the right (for right-handed backhand throwers) and are ideal for gaining distance with less power.
An overstable driver has a strong tendency to fade left at the end of its flight, making it highly reliable in windy conditions or for precise approach shots.
No. While distance drivers offer maximum loft, they require high velocity to fly correctly. Fairway drivers are often better for controlled, accurate shots.
Softer plastics tend to provide more grip and can behave slightly more understable, while harder, premium plastics offer more durability and consistent, predictable flight paths.
Yes. As you use the disc, it will lose some of its initial stability and become more understable due to microscopic wear on the edges.
