For dog owners who refuse to let a sudden downpour ruin their daily walking routine, high-quality protective gear is a necessity rather than a luxury. Harikaji dog raincoats have carved out a niche for pet parents seeking a balance between functional weatherproofing and thoughtful design. A good raincoat does more than just keep the fur dry. It prevents the post-walk 'wet dog smell' from permeating your home and protects your pet's skin from dampness and irritation. When selecting a piece from this category, you aren't just looking for a plastic sheet—you are looking for a tailored piece of outdoor equipment that respects your dog's anatomy and mobility.

Your morning walk quickly turns into a soggy disaster the moment those heavy raindrops start hitting the pavement. I tested the Harikaji Pet Raincoat to see if it could actually keep a tiny companion dry without feeling like a bulky, restrictive straightjacket. This blue XS version is specifically engineered for small dogs and cats, featuring a clever transparent design that ensures you can still see their coat and movement underneath. At under ten dollars, it is a remarkably lightweight solution for sudden downpours. While it is strictly limited to smaller breeds, the variety of seven colors and five sizes means you can likely find a match for your pet's specific build. It turns a messy, shivering walk into a much more manageable outing.
Prioritize Material Integrity and Water Resistance
The most critical factor in any dog raincoat is the fabric's ability to repel water while remaining breathable. You should look for materials that feature a high-density weave or a specialized waterproof coating. A common mistake is choosing a coat that is entirely non-breathable. While this keeps rain out, it can trap heat and moisture against your dog's skin, leading to discomfort or even overheating during brisk walks. Seek out options that offer a balance—waterproof on the exterior to shed raindrops, but with enough breathability to allow air circulation. This ensures your dog stays dry from the rain, not from their own sweat.
Focus on Ergonomic Fit and Range of Motion
A raincoat that is too tight will restrict your dog's movement, potentially causing them to change their gait, while a coat that is too loose will flap awkwardly and allow water to seep in through the sides. When evaluating Harikaji styles, pay close attention to the cut around the chest and the hindquarters. For dogs with deep chests, such as Greyhounds or Boxers, a design that accommodates a wider girth without pinching is essential. Conversely, for shorter-legged breeds, ensure the coat doesn't drag on the ground, which can lead to the fabric becoming soaked and heavy. The goal is a 'snug but mobile' fit that allows for full leg extension and easy jumping.
Assess Closure Systems and Ease of Use
Rainy days are often chaotic, and the last thing you want is a complicated fastening system. Look for raincoats that utilize high-quality Velcro straps or adjustable buckles. Velcro is excellent for quick adjustments to account for a thicker winter coat or a lighter summer coat, but ensure the hook-and-loop material is durable enough to withstand repeated use. Buckles are often more secure for high-energy dogs who might try to shake the coat off, but they can be slightly more cumbersome to fasten with wet hands. A hybrid approach—using adjustable straps to customize the tension—is often the gold standard for versatility.
Consider Visibility and Safety Features
Walking in the rain often coincides with low-light conditions, overcast skies, or early evenings. A raincoat should serve as a safety tool. Look for integrated reflective piping or high-visibility accents that catch the light from passing cars or streetlamps. This is particularly important if your walking route includes roads or poorly lit paths. A coat that enhances your dog's visibility is an investment in their safety that goes far beyond simple moisture protection.
Don't Overlook Practical Details
Small design choices make a massive difference in long-term usability. Check for features like a leash cutout—a small reinforced hole near the collar that allows you to attach a harness or collar without bunching up the fabric. Additionally, consider the length of the coverage. Some designs focus on the torso, while others extend further down the back to protect the tail area. The more surface area covered, the less cleanup you will have to do after the walk, provided the coat remains comfortable and doesn't impede their ability to move naturally.

Quick answers about Harikaji Dog Raincoats before you buy.
Measure the length of your dog from the base of the neck to the base of the tail, as well as the girth around the widest part of the chest to ensure a snug, waterproof fit.
Look for high-density polyester or nylon with a TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) coating, as these materials offer superior water resistance compared to standard canvas.
Hoods provide extra protection for the head and ears during heavy downpours, but they can sometimes obstruct a dog's peripheral vision or slide over their eyes if not fitted correctly.
Avoid machine washing if possible. Instead, wipe the surface with a damp cloth and mild soap. If you must machine wash, use a gentle cycle and never use fabric softeners, which can strip the waterproof coating.
Yes, especially for evening walks. Reflective strips significantly increase your dog's visibility to motorists in low-light or stormy conditions.
Water-resistant gear can handle light drizzle, whereas waterproof raincoats are designed to prevent moisture from penetrating the fabric entirely during heavy rain.
You should be able to fit two fingers comfortably between the raincoat and your dog's body. If it restricts movement or causes chafing, you need to size up.
Bright colors like neon yellow or orange are much safer for outdoor excursions, as they make your dog stand out against grey, rainy backgrounds.
