Most people assume a mobile whiteboard is just a glorified piece of plastic on wheels, but the Tankee easel proves that heavy-duty utility can actually feel lightweight. A Guide to Selecting the Best tankee dry erase boards
Understanding Surface Materials: Porcelain vs. Melamine vs. Painted Steel
The most critical decision you will make is selecting the substrate material. This determines how well the board writes, how easily it erases, and how long it will last. Melamine boards are the most budget-friendly option, typically consisting of a printed layer on a particleboard core. While excellent for light, occasional use, they are prone to 'ghosting'—where marker stains become permanent over time. Painted steel boards offer a middle ground, providing a magnetic surface that is more durable than melamine but still susceptible to wear if used heavily with permanent markers or abrasive erasers. For the gold standard, look for porcelain (ceramic) surfaces. These are fired at extremely high temperatures, making them incredibly resistant to scratches, staining, and chemical damage. If you intend to use your board daily for intense brainstorming or instructional purposes, investing in a porcelain surface is the only way to ensure long-term reliability.
Magnetic Functionality and Utility
Many users seek boards that serve a dual purpose as organizational hubs. When shopping, distinguish between 'non-magnetic' and 'magnetic' boards. A magnetic board allows you to use magnets to hold up notes, photographs, or instructional aids, effectively turning your writing surface into a dynamic bulletin board. If magnetism is a priority, ensure the board is rated for heavy-duty magnetic use. Some cheaper steel boards have a thin coating that makes magnets slide easily, whereas high-quality magnetic surfaces provide enough grip to hold heavy items securely.
Mounting Styles and Installation Flexibility
How you plan to display the board dictates its physical design. There are three primary mounting categories: Wall-mounted, Desktop/Easel-style, and Mobile/Rolling. Wall-mounted boards are permanent fixtures that require precise drilling, making them ideal for fixed office or classroom environments. Desktop boards, often smaller and angled, are perfect for individual note-taking or temporary task management. For collaborative environments, mobile boards on heavy-duty casters allow you to move your workspace from one room to another. When choosing, consider the weight of the board. A porcelain board is significantly heavier than a melamine one, meaning your mounting hardware must be rated for the specific load to prevent accidental falls.
Dimensions and Aspect Ratio
Avoid the mistake of buying a board that is too small for your workflow. A common pitfall is purchasing a compact board for a professional setting, only to find that you run out of 'white space' mid-sentence. For quick reminders, a small desktop size suffices. However, for mapping out projects, teaching complex equations, or conducting brainstorming sessions, larger formats are mandatory. Consider the 'aspect ratio' as well. A wide, landscape-oriented board is better for timelines and flowcharts, while a vertical orientation can work well for checklists or narrow wall spaces.
Maintenance and Longevity Factors
Finally, consider the ecosystem of accessories. A premium board is only as good as the markers and erasers used with it. Check if the board surface is compatible with standard dry-erase markers or if it requires specialized low-odor inks to prevent staining. To extend the life of your board, always opt for microfiber erasers rather than felt ones, which can trap grit and scratch the surface over time. A high-quality board should be easy to clean with a simple damp cloth, leaving no residue behind.

Quick answers about Tankee Dry Erase Boards before you buy.
High-quality heavy-duty boards typically feature reinforced steel frames, thick tempered glass or high-density melamine surfaces, and robust mounting hardware designed to prevent warping over time.
While most boards are designed for dry-erase markers, permanent ink can usually be removed using a dedicated whiteboard cleaner or a small amount of isopropyl alcohol, though glass surfaces handle this much better than melamine.
Ghosting occurs when ink sits too long. To prevent this, use high-quality markers, wipe the board frequently, and occasionally perform a deep clean with a specialized whiteboard cleaning spray.
Not all. Magnetic boards usually require neodymium (rare-earth) magnets to hold papers effectively. Standard ceramic magnets may struggle to hold weight on certain steel-backed surfaces.
Glass boards offer a premium, non-porous surface that is virtually impossible to stain and looks sleek, whereas melamine boards are more budget-friendly, lightweight, and better suited for casual home use.
Large boards should be mounted using heavy-duty wall anchors or directly into wall studs. Always follow the specific mounting template provided by the manufacturer to ensure the board remains level.
Yes, professional-grade boards are specifically designed for high-frequency use, featuring scratch-resistant surfaces that withstand constant erasing in high-traffic environments.
