Decent drivers, good bluetooth connection stability. That's when it starts to sound good. Then it's ANC, wireless charging, better mic clarity etc. After that it's just more refinement and brand name. No huge changes in sound quality.

Wired has the edge in terms of latency free audio, no need for charging, and value for quality of sound. Wireless has the edge in terms of convenience and features (ANC, transparency mode etc). For listening on the go and making calls a lot, wireless is better. For competitive gaming and audio work, wired has some definite benefits.

passive isolation is just the sealing of the ear tip. it provides some noise isolation for free. active noise cancelation is the use of microphones and anti-noise signals to cancel out continuous low-frequency sounds (like engine hum or air conditioning noise). ideally both would be in place. the passive seal would deal with the rumble and the active noise cancelation would deal with the chitter-chatter.

So if you use trains, planes, busses, or loud offices - absolutely. ANC is worth it. But if you're mostly at home or in quiet rooms, then get a good sealed headset without ANC and you'll save money and likely sound just as good.

Ideally 5-6 hours (ANC on) per charge plus 20+ total with the case. Budget ones will often be 2-3 hours per charge. Which can be super annoying. If you have long flights or are doing long work days on calls or whatever, you'll want something that's 8 hours + per charge.

Phone users (iPhone) are fine. If you're Android, aptX Adaptive/LDAC works better because you can use higher bitrates. SBC is always available (but the worst). And you need to make sure both your phone and buds support the codec. That's the only way it's useful. Otherwise, just check compatibility first before you pay more for it.

It’s less about specs and more about fit. Make sure you try all the ear tips that come in the box and maybe try foam tips - they expand to provide a stronger grip than silicone. Make sure it’s at least IPX4 or higher water resistance. And if it still slides off try a hook or open ear style.

If they have an IPX8 rating or if they were specifically designed for swimming (and have music storage on board), because bluetooth doesn't work underwater. For most sweatproof earbuds (IPX4 - IPX5) they won't last in the pool. If you're doing lap swimming, get special swim earbuds that play music from storage.

Multipoint is a feature that allows the earbuds to connect to more than 1 thing at the same time (eg. Laptop + Phone) and switch when you get a phone call automatically. It's very handy if you work across multiple devices and don't want to keep re-pairing everything. Not all earbuds support it and the ones that do handle it better or worse.

They're good for awareness, e. g. running on the road, cycling, sitting at your desk all day and using buds. But they'll have lower bass response and practically no noise cancellation, so bad for noisy commutes, or getting into the zone. So use them as a safety/comfort device, not as an improvement in sound quality.
