Best Equestrian Sports Books in 2026

Identify Your Primary Objective

The first step in selecting an equestrian book is determining whether you are seeking technical instruction or narrative enrichment. If your goal is to improve your riding, look for 'method-based' books. These are often structured around specific disciplines such as dressage, eventing, or western pleasure. A high-quality instructional book will provide progressive steps, moving from fundamental aids to advanced maneuvers. Conversely, if you are looking for inspiration, seek out memoirs or biographies. These books focus on the emotional bond between horse and rider and the psychological challenges of competition, offering a window into the lifestyle rather than a lesson in biomechanics.

Assess the Author's Credentials

In the equestrian world, authority is everything. When purchasing technical manuals, check the author's background. Are they a certified instructor, a professional rider, or a veterinarian? A book on equine nutrition written by a PhD in animal science will offer a different level of depth than one written by a hobbyist. For training guides, look for authors who have competed at high levels or who have a proven track record of developing successful equine athletes. This ensures that the advice you are reading is grounded in practical, tested experience rather than mere theory.

Consider the Visual Component

Equestrianism is a highly visual sport. When buying books on riding technique, the quality of illustrations or photography is a critical decision factor. A book that relies solely on text can be difficult to follow when attempting to understand subtle hand positions or leg aids. Look for books that feature high-resolution photography, detailed diagrams, or even anatomical sketches. For dressage enthusiasts, seeing the exact angle of a horse's poll or the placement of a rider's heel is essential. If the book lacks visual aids, it may be better suited for theoretical study rather than practical application in the arena.

Evaluate the Scope: Discipline-Specific vs. General Horsemanship

Decide if you need a specialist text or a generalist overview. If you are a beginner, a general horsemanship book covering basic grooming, tacking up, and safety is often more valuable than a deep dive into advanced show jumping tactics. However, if you are an experienced rider, a general guide may feel too basic. In that case, narrow your search to niche topics such as equine sports medicine, the psychology of the horse, or specialized training for specific breeds. Understanding whether a book is designed for the 'weekend warrior' or the professional competitor will prevent you from investing in material that is either too shallow or overly dense for your needs.
