A Guide to Selecting the Best Restcloud Fishing Nets
Determine Your Primary Environment
The first decision in selecting a Restcloud net should be based on where you primarily fish. Freshwater anglers targeting bass or trout often benefit from lightweight, compact nets that are easy to maneuver in tight spaces like lily pads or fallen timber. Conversely, saltwater enthusiasts must prioritize corrosion resistance. Saltwater environments are brutal on hardware. Look for aluminum or high-grade composite handles and reinforced netting that can withstand the abrasive nature of salt spray and sand. If you are a multi-species angler, a medium-sized multipurpose net offers the best compromise between portability and capacity.
Mesh Material and Fish Safety
One of the most overlooked aspects of net selection is the mesh type. If you practice catch-and-release, the material of the net is paramount. Traditional nylon meshes can strip the protective slime coating off a fish, leaving it vulnerable to infection. When browsing Restcloud options, look for rubberized or silicone-coated mesh. These materials are much gentler on the fish's scales and fins, and they are significantly easier to clean, as organic debris and slime do not cling to the netting as they do with traditional fabric. Additionally, rubberized mesh is less likely to tangle in your fishing line during the landing process.
Handle Length and Reach
The reach of your net determines how much physical strain you undergo during a fight. For bank fishing, a longer telescopic handle is a massive advantage, allowing you to scoop a fish from a distance without stepping into dangerous mud or water. For boat anglers, a shorter, more rigid handle is often preferred to prevent the net from catching on the gunwales or obstructing movement in a cramped cockpit. Consider the weight of the handle. A handle that is too heavy will cause fatigue during long sessions, while one that is too flimsy may flex or snap when a heavy fish puts pressure on the hoop.
Hoop Shape and Net Depth
The geometry of the net hoop plays a significant role in success rates. A wide, circular hoop is excellent for larger, deep-bodied fish, providing a larger target area. However, a more elongated or teardrop-shaped net can be more effective when fishing in shallow water or when trying to scoop fish from a specific angle. The depth of the net bag is equally important. A shallow net might allow a powerful fish to jump out, whereas a deep bag provides a secure 'pocket' that keeps the fish contained even if they thrash vigorously.
Weight vs. Durability
Finally, weigh the trade-off between a lightweight setup and heavy-duty durability. If you are hiking long distances to reach remote fishing spots, every ounce matters. A lightweight composite net will save your back, but it may lack the structural integrity needed for massive saltwater species. If your goal is to land heavy-duty predators, opt for a net with a reinforced frame and a thicker handle, accepting the extra weight as a necessary component of a reliable landing tool.

Yes, many Restcloud designs feature compact, telescopic handles that are ideal for storing in the limited space of a kayak or small boat.
Simply rinse the mesh with fresh water and allow it to air dry in a shaded area. Avoid direct sunlight for extended periods to prevent UV degradation of the mesh material.

Ensure the net is folded correctly according to its design—either collapsed or tucked—and use a dedicated net clip to secure it to your gear to minimize wind resistance.
