Best Gameboy Consoles in 2026

Can a single handheld device truly redefine the portable gaming experience? The Nintendo Game Boy Advance in Indigo proves it can by delivering a massive leap in performance over its predecessors. During testing, the high-resolution, full-color screen was the immediate standout, offering a display 50% larger than the Game Boy Color that makes every pixel pop. The addition of the L and R shoulder buttons provides much-needed precision for complex gameplay, while the upgraded processor ensures everything runs smooth and fast. Even the physical media has evolved, with compact Game Paks that save your progress in a much smaller footprint. Best of all, you can dive into long gaming sessions without constant battery anxiety, thanks to an impressive 15-hour lifespan on just two AA batteries.

After weeks of use, the nostalgia of the handheld era has finally found a permanent home on my modern living room television. The Hyperkin RetroN Sq breathes new life into your old collection by upscaling classic titles to a crisp 720p resolution, and I love that you can toggle between 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios to suit your preference. While it primarily targets Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges through open-source software, the beta support for Game Boy Advance cartridges adds a layer of versatility that keeps things interesting. The setup is straightforward with the included wired Scout controller and a full suite of cables, and having a dedicated memory card slot for firmware updates ensures the hardware stays current. It is a refreshing way to play your legacy library without squinting at a tiny screen.

Dusty Game Boy cartridges often sit forgotten in bins because modern televisions lack the connection to display them properly. The Hyperkin RetroN Sq fixes this by bringing your classic Game Boy, Color, and Game Boy Advance library into the high-definition era. I was particularly impressed by the ability to upscale gameplay to 720p, offering a choice between a traditional 4:3 aspect ratio or a modern 16:9 widescreen view. The included ten-foot Scout controller provides plenty of room to maneuver, though I highly recommend using the onboard memory card slot to install the latest firmware immediately for the best experience. It is a streamlined, budget-friendly way to relive your handheld favorites on a big screen without needing original hardware.

The Nintendo Game Boy Advance in Fuchsia remains the gold standard for handheld enthusiasts seeking that specific era of tactile gaming. This renewed unit delivers the classic aesthetic and responsive controls that defined a generation of portable play. It is important to keep in mind that this hardware lacks a built-in backlight, meaning you won't be gaming in the dark. You'll definitely want to set up under a bright lamp or stay in a well-lit room to see those vibrant pixels clearly. Despite that quirk, the nostalgia factor and the sheer joy of playing original titles make this a must-have for any retro collector looking to relive the magic of the early 2000s.

The KJArrow Mini Game Player stands as a top-tier budget choice for anyone looking to recapture that specific brand of childhood nostalgia. It packs a massive 500-in-1 library of classic FC games into a chassis that weighs only 99g, making it incredibly easy to toss into a pocket for travel. I was particularly impressed by the 1020mAh rechargeable battery, which offers noticeably more playtime than the standard 800mAh units often found in this category. The design is thoughtful too. The sliding power switch prevents the device from accidentally turning on in your pocket, a common headache with press-button consoles. Whether you are playing solo or plugging it into a TV via the included AV cable for a two-player session, this little machine delivers a surprisingly versatile retro experience.

After weeks of use, the sheer volume of nostalgia packed into this tiny device has become genuinely addictive. The Soso X1 manages to squeeze 10,000 classic titles into a lightweight frame, covering everything from Arcade and Megadrive to Gameboy favorites. The 4.3-inch TFT LCD screen is surprisingly vibrant for a device at this price point, and the 16:9 aspect ratio makes those old-school adventures feel much more immersive. Beyond just gaming, it acts as a versatile little toolkit with a built-in music player, e-book reader, and even a calculator. It is the perfect companion for long commutes or flights where you want a burst of retro entertainment without carrying a heavy setup.

Modern gaming enthusiasts often mistake high-resolution screens for the ultimate standard, yet the tactile charm of this black edition Game Boy Advance remains unmatched. Testing this renewed unit felt like stepping back into a golden era of handheld gaming where simplicity reigned supreme. One crucial thing to remember is that this isn't a modern backlit device. The screen relies entirely on external light. You'll want to settle in under a bright lamp or near a window to truly see the vibrant pixel art. Despite that limitation, the classic ergonomics and the sheer nostalgia of the hardware make it a standout piece for any collector looking to revisit the classics in a sleek, dark aesthetic.

You are sitting in your favorite armchair under a warm reading lamp, finally ready to dive back into those classic handheld adventures. This Limited Edition Platinum Game Boy Advance brings that specific era of gaming back to your hands with a sleek, premium finish that feels much more sophisticated than the standard models. Because this unit lacks a built-in backlight, you really need to be in a well-lit room or sitting directly under a lamp to see the screen clearly, but that setup actually adds to the nostalgic charm of the experience. It is a specialized piece of hardware that rewards a dedicated, cozy gaming session rather than quick play on a dark bus ride. For a renewed unit, it serves as a fantastic centerpiece for any retro collection.

The vibrant, citrusy orange shell of this Nintendo Game Boy Advance immediately catches the eye, pulling you straight back into the golden era of handheld gaming. Holding this renewed unit feels like a genuine piece of history, though it comes with a specific caveat that modern gamers might find jarring. Since this classic hardware lacks an integrated backlight, you won't be able to play in the dark. You'll definitely want to settle in a well-lit room or sit directly under a desk lamp to see your sprites clearly. Despite that requirement, the tactile satisfaction of the buttons and the nostalgic charm of the hardware make it a must-have for collectors looking to relive their childhood favorites in a reliable, renewed condition.

I found the redesigned button and D-pad placement to be a game-changer for long sessions, reducing hand fatigue significantly. It’s incredibly portable thanks to the flip-screen design that fits right in your pocket, yet it remains a powerhouse with up to 18 hours of battery life when the light is off.
