Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers about Ourvii Hand Towels before you buy.
Most hand towels fall between 16 x 28 inches and 20 x 32 inches. Anything smaller feels like a fingertip towel and anything much larger starts behaving like a bath towel. For a guest bath or powder room, a slightly larger towel (around 18 x 30 inches) reads more generous and dries faster than a plush bath towel hung on a ring.
GSM (grams per square meter) measures density. For hand towels, 500–600 GSM is the sweet spot: plush enough to feel substantial in the hand, but quick enough to dry between uses. Towels above 700 GSM feel luxe but stay damp longer, and anything under 400 GSM tends to feel thin and flimsy for a hand towel.
Both refer to where the cotton is grown rather than a guaranteed quality tier, and both produce long-staple fibers that make softer, stronger, less-linty towels. What matters more in practice is the fiber length and how the towel is woven. A well-made long-staple Turkish or Egyptian cotton towel will outperform a generic short-staple towel labeled with the same name.
Shedding usually comes from short-staple cotton, loose weaving, or leftover processing residue, and it's worst in the first few washes. Pilling happens when loose fibers rub together and ball up. Look for long-staple or combed cotton, avoid towels with heavy decorative loops on the face, and expect shedding to taper off after three to five wash cycles.
Wash in warm water with a mild detergent, skip fabric softener and dryer sheets (they coat fibers and kill absorbency), and tumble dry low. Wash hand towels separately from bath towels and heavily soiled laundry so they don't pick up lint. A half-cup of white vinegar in the rinse cycle helps strip detergent buildup and restores softness.
Zero-twist yarns are barely twisted, which makes towels noticeably softer and fluffier but less durable and slower to release water. Standard twisted cotton feels a bit crisper and lasts longer through repeated washing. For a hand towel that gets used many times a day, twisted or low-twist construction usually holds up better.
Plan on two to three hand towels per bathroom in rotation: one in use, one in the wash, one clean in reserve. If your bathroom serves guests or a busy household, add one more. Having extras means you're never hanging a damp towel back on the ring for the next person.
Choose a mid-weight towel (around 500–600 GSM) in a light or neutral color with a clean woven border rather than heavy embellishment. Lighter colors hide less but show wear and lint less dramatically than black, and they look crisp against most décor. A towel with a hanging loop is a practical bonus in a small powder room.
Deep dyes — black, navy, charcoal, bright red — can bleed for the first several washes and tend to fade faster than pastels or whites. Wash new dark towels separately in cold water for the first few cycles. If colorfastness matters most to you, whites, creams, and light blues hold their appearance the longest.
Yes, if your bathroom has poor ventilation or the towel hangs damp against a wall. Quick-dry towels use lower GSM, waffle weaves, or moisture-wicking blends that release water fast and resist that sour, musty smell. You trade some plushness for freshness, which is usually the right call for a towel that's used and rehung all day.
