A Guide to Selecting the Best Multi Horse Blankets
Understanding Weight and Seasonality
The primary function of a blanket is thermal regulation. When building a collection, you should not look for a single 'do-it-all' blanket, but rather a tiered system. For extreme winter conditions, look for heavy-weight turnout blankets with high-loft synthetic fill. These are designed to trap body heat even in sub-zero temperatures. For transitional seasons like spring or autumn, medium-weight blankets offer a balance of warmth and breathability. Finally, lightweight or 'summer' blankets are essential for preventing overheating during mild weather or for horses that tend to run hot. A smart buying strategy involves selecting a heavy turnout for the frost, a medium turnout for the rain, and a lightweight sheet for the humidity.
Fabric Technology: Waterproofing vs. Breathability
One of the most common mistakes is prioritizing waterproofing at the total expense of breathability. A blanket that is 100% waterproof but lacks ventilation will trap sweat against the horse's skin, leading to chills and potential skin issues like rain rot. When evaluating blankets, look for high-denier ripstop fabrics that offer durability against rubbing and kicking, paired with a breathable membrane. High-quality turnouts utilize a 'breathable waterproof' construction, allowing moisture vapor to escape while preventing liquid water from penetrating the surface. If you are purchasing stable blankets, focus less on waterproofing and more on moisture-wicking cotton or poly-cotton blends that keep the horse dry during sleep.
Durability and Construction Details
Horses are notoriously hard on their gear. To ensure your investment lasts more than one season, pay close attention to the hardware and reinforcement points. Look for double-stitched seams and reinforced patches at the quarters and chest, where friction is highest. The closure systems are equally vital. Heavy-duty, rust-resistant metal buckles or high-quality coated zippers are preferable to cheap plastic snaps that can crack in freezing temperatures. Additionally, check for adjustable surcingles and belly straps. A blanket that can be tightened or loosened as the horse's condition changes provides much better long-term utility than a fixed-fit garment.
Fit and Movement
A blanket that fits poorly is not just uncomfortable. It can be dangerous. A blanket that is too tight restricts blood flow and movement, while one that is too loose can cause rubbing and sores. Look for designs that feature 'gusseted' shoulders or articulated joints, which allow the horse to move its forelegs freely without the blanket pulling across the chest. When selecting multiple blankets, ensure they follow a consistent sizing logic, but be aware that different brands may cut their necks or depths differently. Always prioritize a design that allows for a natural range of motion, especially for horses that spend significant time turned out in a pasture.

Yes, purchasing blankets in sets or bundles typically offers a significant discount per unit compared to buying single blankets, making them ideal for owners managing multiple horses on a budget.
While you can, it is better to choose blankets specifically designed for turnout if they are going outside. For indoor use, look for lighter, more breathable materials to prevent overheating in the stall.
Always measure each horse's length (from wither to tail) and depth (from chest to flank) individually. Even in a multi-pack, you should ensure the set covers the specific size range of your herd.
Turnout blankets are waterproof and windproof for outdoor protection, whereas stable blankets are designed for indoor warmth and focus on breathability and moisture wicking.
Wash them whenever they become soiled or develop an odor. Because you are rotating through multiple blankets, you can space out laundry days, but ensure they are dried thoroughly to prevent mildew.
No. Heavy-weight blankets are designed for extreme cold. For year-round versatility, look for medium-weight or adjustable blankets that can be layered depending on the temperature.
