Understanding Fabric Weight and Thermal Properties
The most fundamental decision in purchasing a horse blanket is determining the weight and insulation level required for the environment. Blankets are generally categorized into three types: turnout, stable, and fleece. Turnout blankets are designed for outdoor use and must possess a high degree of thermal insulation paired with weatherproofing. Look for materials that offer high 'gram weight' in the fill, as this dictates how much heat the blanket retains. Stable blankets, conversely, are intended for indoor use where wind and rain are not factors. These focus more on breathability and preventing the horse from sweating excessively during sleep. For transitional weather, lightweight fleece or mesh blankets are ideal for preventing chills without risking the overheating that comes with heavy synthetic fills.
Waterproofing vs. Breathability: The Crucial Balance
One of the most common mistakes in horse care is prioritizing waterproofness at the expense of breathability. A blanket that is completely impermeable to water often becomes impermeable to vapor as well. This leads to a phenomenon known as 'sweat accumulation,' where the horse's body heat creates moisture that becomes trapped against the skin, potentially leading to heat rash or chills once the horse stops moving. When shopping for turnout blankets, look for 'breathable waterproof' fabrics. These utilize advanced membranes that allow moisture vapor to escape while preventing liquid water droplets from entering. If you are in a high-moisture environment, prioritize a high denier fabric to prevent tearing, but ensure the weave allows for adequate air exchange.
Durability and Material Composition
Horses are notoriously hard on their gear. They rub, kick, and scrape against stall walls. When evaluating a blanket, pay close attention to the denier of the outer shell. A higher denier indicates a thicker, more abrasion-resistant fabric. For horses that tend to be 'blanket destroyers,' a heavy-duty ripstop nylon is essential. Additionally, inspect the quality of the fastenings. Double-ended zippers, heavy-duty Velcro, and reinforced surcingles are indicators of a high-quality garment. Check the stitching around high-stress areas, such as the chest and the girth, to ensure the blanket can withstand the lateral forces generated by a moving horse.
Fit and Ergonomics
A blanket that does not fit correctly is more than just an inconvenience. It can cause long-term musculoskeletal issues. A blanket that is too tight can restrict shoulder movement and impede circulation, while one that is too loose can slip and cause the horse to trip. Look for blankets with adjustable features, such as belly surcingles, leg straps, and adjustable chest closures. These allow you to fine-tune the fit as the horse’s coat changes with the seasons or as they gain/lose weight. Ideally, the blanket should drape smoothly over the wither without bunching, providing full coverage of the hindquarters without dragging on the ground.

Quick answers about Car Horse Care Blankets before you buy.
Turnout blankets are waterproof and windproof, designed for outdoor use to protect against the elements. Stable blankets are typically made of breathable, non-waterproof fabrics meant for indoor use to maintain warmth without moisture buildup.
Weight is measured in grams. A lightweight blanket (100g or less) is for mild weather, a medium weight (200g) is for standard winter conditions, and a heavy weight (300g+) is for extreme cold or horses with little body fat.
Look for blankets with a smooth, synthetic lining—such as polyester or satin—on the chest and shoulder areas to minimize friction against the horse's coat.
Fleece linings provide extra insulation and comfort, making them ideal for colder climates or horses that struggle to stay warm. However, they may be too warm for milder temperatures.
Choose blankets with adjustable chest straps and leg straps. High-quality designs often include 'anti-entanglement' features like breakaway closures or reinforced surcingles.
Most are 'water-resistant' or have a waterproof outer shell. For maximum protection, look for blankets with taped seams, which prevent water from seeping through the stitching.
Always check the care label first. Generally, it is best to machine wash on a gentle cycle with mild detergent and air dry or tumble dry on very low heat to avoid melting synthetic fibers.
