A Guide to Selecting the Best Kalona Outdoor Fountains
Material Durability and Weather Resistance
When investing in an outdoor fountain, the material is the single most important factor in determining how much maintenance you will perform over the years. Many Kalona designs utilize high-quality resin or polyresin, which is engineered to mimic the heavy, textured feel of natural stone like granite or slate without the extreme weight or susceptibility to cracking during freeze-thaw cycles. If you live in a region with harsh winters, lightweight, weather-resistant resins are often superior to solid concrete, which can spall or crack when water trapped in pores expands. For those seeking a more premium, permanent installation, look for reinforced composite materials that offer UV protection to prevent the sun from fading the finish or making the structure brittle over time.
Water Flow Dynamics and Sound Profiles
Not all water features are designed to sound the same. One of the most common mistakes buyers make is overlooking the 'acoustic footprint' of the fountain. If your goal is to drown out the sound of a nearby busy street or a loud air conditioning unit, you should look for fountains with significant 'splash' or a higher vertical drop. These create a more turbulent, white-noise effect. Conversely, if you want a fountain for meditation or quiet reading, seek out designs with gentle overflows or weeping walls that produce a soft, consistent trickle. Pay close attention to the pump specifications. A pump that is too powerful for a small basin will cause splashing that wastes water and creates a mess on your patio, while a pump that is too weak will result in a stagnant pool rather than a moving feature.
Placement and Power Access
Maintenance and Water Management
An outdoor fountain is a living ecosystem that requires regular attention. Before purchasing, consider how easy it will be to access the pump for cleaning. Debris like leaves, pine needles, and even small insects can clog the internal tubing and burn out the motor. Look for models where the pump is easily accessible through a removable reservoir or a discrete access panel. Additionally, consider the evaporation rate. Fountains with large surface areas of exposed water will lose volume quickly in hot, windy climates, requiring more frequent refills to prevent the pump from running dry. Incorporating a fountain into a shaded area can help minimize evaporation and algae growth, though you must still balance this with the need for adequate sunlight to keep the water looking fresh.
Scale and Visual Proportion
Finally, consider the scale of the fountain relative to your landscape. A massive, multi-tiered fountain can become an overwhelming focal point in a small courtyard, whereas a tiny tabletop model will disappear in a sprawling garden. Use the 'rule of thirds' or consider the height of your surrounding foliage. A fountain that sits at eye level when seated is often more impactful for patio dining areas, while taller, vertical structures work best as architectural anchors in larger garden beds. Always measure your intended space—including the 'splash zone' around the base—to ensure the fountain integrates seamlessly into your existing decor.

Quick answers about Kalona Outdoor Fountains before you buy.
For durability against UV rays and temperature shifts, resin and stone-composite materials are superior to thin plastics, as they resist cracking and fading over time.
Most modern models feature auto-refill capabilities or large reservoirs, but you should still check water levels weekly, especially during high evaporation periods in summer.
Yes, most high-quality fountains come with submersible pumps that can be cleaned by simply opening the pump housing to remove debris or algae buildup.
Using a specialized fountain cleaner or adding a small amount of algaecide prevents green buildup without harming the pump or changing the water's clarity significantly.
While many are rated for outdoor use, you must drain the fountain and unplug the pump before the first frost to prevent ice from expanding and cracking the structure.
Solar fountains are eco-friendly and easy to place anywhere, but they rely on direct sunlight. Electric fountains offer consistent, continuous flow regardless of weather.
Noise levels vary based on the 'drop' height. A tiered fountain with a long fall creates a louder splash, while a bubbling basalt stone provides a much quieter, ambient trickle.
As long as the water is kept in motion via the pump, mosquitoes are unlikely to breed. Stagnant water is the primary risk, so ensure your pump runs regularly.
