The hexagonal design is particularly striking, featuring intricate floral cutouts that play beautifully with light when paired with a candle. I found the white and gold brush finish to be a sophisticated touch that prevents it from looking like standard rustic kitsch. It is impressively versatile, measuring 13.5 inches high but reaching 15.5 inches with the top loop, which makes it substantial enough for a fireplace mantle or a garden pathway. The NEWIMAGE Rustic Farmhouse Lantern Set delivers an immediate old-world charm through its stunning beige and brushed gold floral cutout design. I was particularly impressed by how the hexagonal metal frames catch the light, making them much more than just simple candle holders. You get two distinct sizes in this set, allowing you to layer them on a fireplace mantle or use the larger one as a centerpiece for a patio table. They are versatile enough to accommodate everything from small tea lights to larger pillar candles up to 4 inches tall. Whether you are styling a coastal beach theme or a classic country porch, these lanterns add a sophisticated, romantic touch to both indoor shelves and outdoor walkways.
The most critical factor in selecting an outdoor lantern is the material composition. Because these units are exposed to rain, humidity, UV rays, and temperature fluctuations, cheap plastics or thin metals will quickly succumb to rust, fading, or cracking. Look for lanterns constructed from heavy-duty metals such as aluminum, bronze, or wrought iron with specialized powder coatings. Aluminum is particularly prized for its natural resistance to corrosion, making it ideal for coastal environments where salt air can destroy lesser materials. If you opt for glass components, ensure they are tempered or thick-walled to prevent shattering from thermal expansion or accidental impact during cleaning.
Light Source and Illumination Style
How a lantern lights your space depends heavily on the chosen light source. You generally have three paths: traditional hardwired electrical, solar-powered, or battery-operated. Hardwired lanterns offer the most consistent and brightest light, making them perfect for permanent porch installations, but they require professional electrical work. Solar lanterns are excellent for path lighting and low-maintenance garden accents, though their brightness may fluctuate depending on sun exposure. For a vintage aesthetic, many high-end lanterns are designed to accommodate LED filament bulbs, which mimic the warm, flickering glow of candlelight while providing the energy efficiency of modern technology. Consider the 'color temperature' of the bulbs you intend to use. A warm, amber hue (around 2700K) is typically best for creating a relaxing, high-end atmosphere.
Design Language and Architectural Integration
A lantern should complement your home's existing architecture rather than clash with it. If your home features a modern, minimalist design, look for lanterns with clean lines, geometric shapes, and matte black or brushed nickel finishes. Conversely, for traditional, colonial, or rustic homes, lanterns with intricate scrollwork, lantern-style silhouettes, and weathered copper or bronze finishes will feel more integrated. Pay close attention to the 'transparency' of the lantern. A lantern with large, clear glass panes will project light further and act as a brighter light source, whereas lanterns with frosted glass or decorative metal filigree will create softer, more diffused shadows, which is better for subtle mood lighting.
Installation and Mounting Versatility

Installation and Mounting Versatility
Before finalizing your purchase, determine exactly where the lantern will live. Some lanterns are designed exclusively for wall mounting (sconces), while others are meant to sit atop a table or hang from a hook. If you are looking for versatility, seek out models that offer multiple mounting options. Additionally, consider the 'IP rating' if you are placing lanterns in areas prone to direct water exposure. A higher ingress protection rating ensures that moisture cannot penetrate the internal electrical housing, preventing short circuits and extending the life of the unit.

Quick answers about Newimage Outdoor Lanterns before you buy.
Prioritize weatherproofing ratings (IP ratings), material durability like powder-coated aluminum or treated wood, and light temperature. Warm light (2700K) is generally better for ambiance than cool white light.
Solar lanterns are excellent for accent lighting and ease of installation, but they typically offer lower lumen output and shorter run times compared to hardwired or battery-operated lanterns.
The Ingress Protection (IP) rating tells you how resistant the lantern is to dust and water. For outdoor use, look for at least an IP44 rating to ensure it can handle rain and splashes.
Only if they are specifically rated for outdoor use. Indoor lanterns lack the necessary seals to prevent moisture buildup, which can lead to corrosion, short circuits, and rapid degradation.
Metal alloys like aluminum and stainless steel are top choices because they resist rust. For a more rustic look, high-quality treated wood or resin can also withstand the elements if properly sealed.
LED lanterns are highly recommended for their energy efficiency, longevity, and ability to integrate smart home technology. Traditional bulbs are mostly used for specific vintage aesthetic preferences.
Most lanterns require minimal upkeep, such as occasional cleaning with a damp cloth to remove dust and spider webs, and checking seals annually to ensure they remain watertight.
