Outdoor furniture is a significant investment, but even high-quality plastic or resin benches are susceptible to the relentless cycle of UV exposure, bird droppings, pollen, and sudden rainstorms. A dedicated patio bench cover acts as a sacrificial barrier, preserving the structural integrity and color of your seating while drastically reducing the time you spend scrubbing away grime. Rather than simply grabbing any waterproof sheet, choosing the right cover requires an understanding of material density, fitment styles, and environmental resilience to ensure your furniture remains protected throughout the changing seasons.

A Guide to Selecting the Best Plastic Patio Bench Covers
Material Composition and UV Resistance
The most critical factor in a bench cover is the fabric or polymer used. Since these covers sit in direct sunlight, standard thin plastics will often become brittle and crack within a single season due to UV degradation. Look for covers made from heavy-duty polyester with a reinforced PVC or polyurethane coating. These materials offer a dual advantage: they are flexible enough to drape over the contours of the bench without tearing, yet thick enough to block harmful ultraviolet rays from bleaching the color of your plastic furniture. If you live in a high-heat environment, prioritize materials specifically labeled as UV-stabilized to prevent the cover itself from disintegrating.
Waterproofing and Drainage Capabilities
A common mistake is selecting a cover that is 'water-resistant' rather than truly 'waterproof.' For patio furniture, you need a material that prevents moisture from seeping through the weave of the fabric. However, waterproofing alone isn't enough. If water pools in the center of the bench, the weight can stretch the material or cause mold to grow underneath. High-quality covers often feature a tapered design or integrated drainage channels that encourage water to run off the sides. Additionally, check for reinforced seams—heat-sealed seams are far superior to stitched seams, as stitching creates tiny needle holes that act as entry points for moisture.
Fitment: Custom vs. Universal Styles
When shopping, you will encounter two primary styles: universal covers and custom-fit options. Universal covers are more budget-friendly and versatile, but they often result in excess fabric bunching at the base, which can trap moisture and debris. To mitigate this, ensure any universal cover you buy includes an adjustable drawstring or a buckle system to cinch the bottom tight against the legs. If your bench has a unique shape—such as an ergonomic curve or built-in armrests—a more tailored fit will prevent the cover from flapping in the wind, which is a leading cause of mechanical wear and tear on the fabric.
Wind Protection and Security Features
A heavy gust of wind can turn a lightweight bench cover into a sail, potentially ripping it off the furniture or even causing damage to your patio decor. To prevent this, look for covers equipped with heavy-duty fastening systems. Ideally, your cover should feature both a drawstring at the hem and buckled straps that wrap around the legs of the bench. These dual-layer security measures ensure the cover remains anchored even during thunderstorms. Furthermore, check for air vents. Small, mesh-covered vents allow for airflow, which prevents the 'greenhouse effect' from trapping humidity and condensation under the cover, protecting your bench from mildew.
Ease of Maintenance
Finally, consider how you will clean the cover itself. Since it will collect dust, leaves, and sap, you want a material that can be easily hosed down. Avoid covers with complex decorative elements that might trap dirt. A smooth, high-denier fabric is generally the easiest to maintain, allowing you to simply spray it with a garden hose and let it air dry before the next use.

Look for heavy-duty polyester or reinforced polyethylene with a waterproof coating. These materials resist UV degradation and prevent water from seeping through to the bench surface.
Measure your bench's length, width, and height before purchasing. Always choose a cover that offers at least 1 to 2 inches of clearance on all sides to allow for easy installation and airflow.
Most high-quality covers are water-resistant or waterproof, but check for heat-sealed seams. Seams that are merely stitched may eventually allow moisture to drip through during heavy rain.
Select covers that include integrated drawstring hems, buckled straps, or heavy-duty grommets. These features allow you to anchor the cover securely to the bench legs.
Yes, if moisture gets trapped. To prevent this, choose covers with built-in ventilation flaps and ensure the bench is completely dry before applying the cover.
Yes, provided they are labeled as UV-resistant. UV-stabilized fabrics prevent the plastic from becoming brittle and cracking under direct sunlight.
Absolutely. Winter-grade covers are typically thicker and designed to withstand snow loads and freezing temperatures, providing an extra layer of insulation for your furniture.
