A Guide to Selecting the Best hexagonal planter terrariums
Material Quality and Glass Clarity
The primary function of a terrarium is to act as a window into a miniature world. When evaluating hexagonal models, the quality of the glass is paramount. Look for high-clarity, borosilicate glass if you intend to house sensitive plants. Borosilicate is more resistant to thermal shock, which is crucial if your terrarium sits in a sunlit window where temperature fluctuations can occur. Avoid containers with heavy distortions or 'wavy' glass, as these can refract light unevenly, potentially creating 'hot spots' that might scorch delicate mosses or ferns. Additionally, check the thickness of the glass panes. A sturdier, thicker glass provides better structural integrity for larger hexagonal builds and offers a more premium, weighted feel that prevents tipping.
Open vs. Closed Ecosystems
One of the most critical decision factors is whether the hexagonal planter is an open or closed system. This choice is dictated entirely by the plant life you intend to grow. Closed hexagonal terrariums feature a lid (often glass or wood) that traps moisture, creating a self-sustaining water cycle perfect for humidity-loving species like Fittonia, ferns, and tropical mosses. Open hexagonal planters, conversely, allow for airflow and prevent stagnant moisture buildup, making them the ideal choice for succulents, cacti, and air plants that require dry conditions to prevent root rot. If you are undecided, consider a modular design or a model with a removable lid to give you maximum versatility.
Geometric Scale and Depth
The 'hex' shape provides unique angles that can make a small space feel larger or a large space feel more structured. When selecting a size, consider the 'depth-to-width' ratio. A shallow, wide hexagonal tray is excellent for spreading out a variety of small succulents, creating a low-profile landscape. A tall, vertical hexagonal prism, however, is better suited for creating a layered 'jungle' effect with taller plants. Always account for the 'headroom'—the distance between the substrate and the top of the glass. Plants need space to grow upward, and if the enclosure is too shallow, you will find yourself constantly pruning your plants to prevent them from touching the glass, which can lead to rot due to condensation.
Base Stability and Drainage Considerations
Because hexagonal shapes can sometimes be top-heavy, especially when tall and narrow, look for models with a stable, weighted base. Some premium hexagonal planters come with integrated wooden or stone bases that provide a decorative aesthetic while adding much-needed ballast. Furthermore, since most glass terrariums lack drainage holes, you must consider how you will manage water. Look for designs that allow enough space at the bottom for a 'drainage layer' of pebbles, charcoal, and expanded clay. This layer is vital for preventing the soil from becoming waterlogged, which is the leading cause of plant death in enclosed geometric planters.
Aesthetic Integration and Frame Styles
Finally, consider how the frame of the hexagon complements your interior decor. Minimalist enthusiasts often prefer frameless, all-glass hexagonal designs that offer an unobstructed view of the greenery. If your style is more industrial or bohemian, look for hexagonal terrariums encased in metal frames—such as brass, matte black steel, or copper. These frames not only add a structural element to the design but also provide extra protection for the glass edges. Ensure the frame material is rust-resistant, especially if you plan on using the terrarium in high-humidity environments.

Quick answers about Hexagonal Planter Terrariums before you buy.
Succulents and cacti thrive in these geometric containers if they have excellent drainage. For closed hexagonal setups, moisture-loving tropicals like ferns, mosses, and calatheas are ideal.
Yes. If your hexagonal planter has a lid, you must open it periodically to prevent mold and ensure fresh air circulation. Open-top hexagonal designs are better for plants that prefer drier conditions.
Always include a drainage layer, such as pebbles or activated charcoal, at the bottom of the terrarium. This prevents water from pooling directly around the roots.
While they look beautiful on patios, glass terrariums are best kept in sheltered areas. Direct sunlight can act like a magnifying glass, overheating the soil and scorching your plants.
It depends on the design. Closed terrariums require very little water as they create their own ecosystem, whereas open hexagonal planters for succulents need watering only when the soil is completely dry.
The angles of a hexagon can make reaching corners slightly trickier than round bowls. Using a long-handled brush or a small microfiber cloth on a stick is the most effective way to keep the glass streak-free.
Condensation is normal in closed terrariums, indicating a healthy water cycle. However, if the glass is constantly covered in heavy droplets, you are overwatering and should leave the lid off for a day.
