If you are a PlayStation 5 owner, you have likely encountered the dreaded 'Storage Full' notification after just a handful of AAA titles. While the console comes with a decent amount of internal space, modern gaming demands are skyrocketing, often requiring over 100GB for a single installation. Because the PS5 utilizes a high-speed architecture, you cannot simply plug in a standard external USB hard drive to play your games directly. Instead, you must expand your internal capacity using an M.2 NVMe Solid State Drive (SSD). This guide will help you navigate the technical nuances of selecting an expansion drive that maintains the lightning-fast performance your console was designed for.

A Guide to Selecting the Best Mac PlayStation 5 Storage
Understanding the Interface Requirements
The most critical factor in choosing a drive for the PlayStation 5 is the interface. The console requires an M.2 NVMe SSD that supports PCIe Gen4 x4. While you can technically install older PCIe Gen3 drives, you will face a significant performance bottleneck, leading to longer loading screens and potential stuttering in high-fidelity games. To ensure seamless integration, look specifically for drives labeled as PCIe Gen4. This ensures the bandwidth is sufficient to handle the massive data throughput required by the console's custom engine.
The Importance of Read Speeds
In the world of next-gen gaming, speed is everything. The PlayStation 5 architecture is built around the concept of near-instantaneous data streaming. To avoid being the weak link in your hardware setup, aim for a sequential read speed of at least 5,500 MB/s. While some high-end drives can exceed 7,000 MB/s, the jump from a slow drive to a 5,500 MB/s drive is where you will notice the most dramatic improvement in gameplay fluidity and load times. Anything significantly lower than this threshold may result in a sub-optimal experience that fails to leverage the console's capabilities.
Heatsink Necessity and Thermal Management
One mistake many users make is purchasing a 'bare' drive without considering heat. The PS5 internal expansion slot is a confined space that can generate significant heat during extended gaming sessions. High-speed NVMe drives are notorious for thermal throttling—a process where the drive slows itself down to prevent damage from overheating. To prevent this, you must select a drive that either comes with a pre-installed heatsink or purchase a compatible aftermarket heatsink separately. A dedicated heatsink ensures consistent performance and protects the longevity of your hardware by maintaining stable operating temperatures.
Capacity vs. Longevity
When deciding on capacity, think about your library rather than just your current games. A 500GB drive will fill up incredibly fast, often leaving little room after the OS and a few titles are installed. We recommend a minimum of 1TB for a meaningful upgrade, though 2TB is currently the 'sweet spot' for value and long-term utility. Additionally, keep an eye on the TBW (Terabytes Written) rating if you plan on heavy data transfers, though for pure gaming, the capacity and speed are much more pressing concerns than extreme endurance ratings.
Summary of Decision Logic
To make the right choice, follow this hierarchy: First, ensure it is a PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD. Second, verify the read speed is above 5,500 MB/s. Third, confirm it includes a heatsink. If a drive meets these three criteria, you are ready to expand your library without compromising the premium experience of your console.

To ensure seamless loading and prevent performance bottlenecks, look for an M.2 SSD with a sequential read speed of at least 5,500 MB/s.
Yes, most high-speed external SSDs are compatible with macOS, but if you are using an internal M.2 drive via an enclosure, you will need to format the drive to APFS or ExFAT for Mac compatibility.
Yes, the PS5 requires an SSD with a built-in heatsink or one that you attach separately to prevent thermal throttling during intense gaming sessions.
We recommend a minimum of 1TB, though 2TB is the sweet spot for most gamers given the massive file sizes of modern AAA titles.
If the drive is formatted specifically for the PS5 file system, your Mac may prompt you to reformat it before use. Always back up data before switching formats.
Yes. USB external drives are great for storing extra PS4 games or archiving PS5 data, but only internal M.2 SSDs provide the bandwidth necessary to run PS5 games.
