A Guide to Selecting the Best WD_BLACK PlayStation 5 Storage
Understanding the M.2 NVMe Requirement
The PlayStation 5 does not support traditional external hard drives for playing modern PS5 games. Those are relegated to storing PS4 titles or acting as a backup. To play current-gen games directly from an expansion drive, you must use an M.2 NVMe Solid State Drive (SSD). Not all NVMe drives are created equal, however. To ensure your games don't stutter or suffer from long loading screens, the drive must meet specific technical thresholds set by the console manufacturer. Specifically, you need a drive that supports PCIe Gen4 x4 speeds. While a Gen3 drive might physically fit, it will bottleneck the console's performance, effectively negating the benefits of the high-speed architecture. When browsing the WD_BLACK lineup, ensure the drive is explicitly rated for Gen4 speeds to guarantee compatibility with the console's internal throughput.
The Critical Role of Sequential Read Speeds
The most important metric to scrutinize is the sequential read speed. The PS5 requires a minimum sustained read speed of approximately 5,500 MB/s to function optimally. If you select a drive that falls below this threshold, you may experience 'pop-in' textures, longer loading screens, or even performance degradation in open-world titles that stream data constantly. High-end WD_BLACK drives are engineered to exceed these minimums, often pushing toward the 7,000 MB/s mark. This extra headroom ensures that even as the drive fills up or undergoes heavy multitasking, the data delivery remains consistent and fluid.
Capacity vs. Longevity
When deciding on capacity, it is tempting to go for the largest option available, but you must balance this with your budget and the drive's endurance. For most enthusiasts, a 1TB drive is the baseline, but a 2TB drive is currently the 'sweet spot' for value and longevity. As game file sizes continue to balloon, a 1TB drive can feel cramped very quickly. Furthermore, consider the thermal management. High-speed Gen4 drives generate significant heat during intensive gaming sessions. Since the PS5's internal expansion slot is tucked away near the cooling system, choosing a drive that includes a pre-installed heatsink is a massive advantage. This prevents thermal throttling, a phenomenon where the drive slows itself down to prevent overheating, which can cause sudden frame rate drops during gameplay.
Final Recommendation Logic
To make your final decision, follow this hierarchy: First, confirm the drive is PCIe Gen4. Second, verify the read speed is at least 5,500 MB/s. Third, prioritize a drive with an integrated heatsink to ensure stability. If you are a casual gamer with a modest library, a 1TB high-speed drive will suffice. However, if you are a power user who wants to install every major release without constant management, investing in a 2TB model with top-tier read speeds is the most cost-effective way to future-proof your console.

Quick answers about Wd_Black Playstation 5 Storage before you buy.
Yes. Because these drives use NVMe PCIe Gen4 technology, they meet the specific bandwidth requirements of the PS5, ensuring games load as quickly as the console's internal storage.
Yes. The PlayStation 5 requires M.2 SSDs to have a built-in heatsink to prevent thermal throttling during intense gaming sessions. Always ensure the specific model you buy includes one.
Sony recommends a minimum capacity of 825GB, but for the best value and longevity, we suggest aiming for 1TB or 2TB to accommodate modern, large-scale game installs.
Yes. Once installed, you can store and launch PS5 games directly from the expansion drive without needing to move them back to the console's internal storage.
You can store and play both PS4 and PS5 games from the expansion drive, though PS4 games will play from the drive while PS5 games can be played directly from it.
You will need to remove the PS5's side cover, locate the M.2 expansion slot, insert the drive at an angle, secure it with the provided screw, and then reattach the cover.
While a Gen3 drive might physically fit, it will not meet the speed requirements of the PS5, leading to significantly slower loading times and potential performance issues.
No, the PS5 features a single M.2 expansion slot, so you can only install one expansion drive at a time.
