it varies a lot depending on the ink, the paper, and where you put it. pigmented inks on good archival acid free paper can last 80-100+ years in normal indoor environment. the cheap dye based posters might start showing wear after just a few years. beware of sun exposure, direct sunlight is a killer for them. even just a bright south facing wall will help to accelerate their fade. if you frame it and use uv filtering glass then that's the best thing you can do. then try and get it out of direct sunlight.
unframed is generally cheaper and allows you more control over the style of your mat, glass and frame... but you'll likely pay more at a frame shop depending on the size of the work. ready to hang framed generally makes your life easier and can be cheaper than custom framing. but frame quality is all over the place and the mats may not be archival. for cheap prints - go with a ready made frame from a craft store. if it's a limited edition or valuable piece... consider custom framing with acid free stuff.
Make the print match the wall, not the wall match the print. A good rule of thumb is for prints to take up ~2/3 - 3/4 of the horizontal space of the furniture you're hanging them over (sofa, bed, console). If you're hanging on a blank wall, generally a single print has to be at least 24" x 36" to look like it belongs (or gallery wall of smaller prints). Pay attention to the print's size listed. Many print sizes are A sized (A2, A3) or sized in inches which may not match standard frames. (one is standard framed, one isn't)
Small prints (typically) will come flat and in a rigid mailer, anything larger probably will come rolled up in a solid tube (which will likely take a day or two under weight to flatten it back out). Most common issues in shipping would be creases/bent corners/scuffed up surfaces. Try to take a pic of the packaging and damage if you can, before you fully open it. Most good dealers will replace prints that are damaged without a charge, but it depends on the seller, so you might want to check what the return window is before you make a purchase.
If the seller limits the number of prints, then it's a limited edition. That can make it more rare, but only if the artist or publisher themselves are collectable. In other words, a numbered print by some anonymous artist is probably just a mark-up for marketing. But if it's a high quality print: archival ink, heavy cotton rag paper, screenprinted by hand, with an artist's signature, then that would make it worth more. Get the print because you love it, and if it ends up being worth something then that's a happy surprise.
For anything lighter than maybe 10 lbs, you can just use a picture hook or adhesive strips. Be wary of adhesive strips on textured walls and new paint though. If you are hanging anything substantial/heavy you should use two hooks a few inches apart to prevent tilting. Always hang on a stud or with proper wall anchors. Don't hang above a heat source or in a steamy bathroom. Put little rubber bumpers on the bottom corners to allow air behind it for circulation and ensure the piece hangs level.
Regular glass is cheap, clear, and barely blocks UV. Acrylic is lighter and won't break, which can be useful if you have a big frame or a kids' room. UV glass/acrylic will cost more, and will block most of the harmful light. Good idea for long term or if you're hanging it where it gets a lot of sun. Never have the glass touch the surface of the print. Always use matting or some sort of spacer to leave a tiny air gap.
They can be great deals if you're ok with doing the print yourself. You get to choose the size, paper type, finish etc. AND no shipping costs. BUT the quality ultimately depends on your printer and paper choice. Printing them as an inkjet on normal copy paper will make them very boring and flat. Also make sure to check the resolution of the file. For a sharp print at 18x24 inches, you ideally need at least 300 DPI at that size, or 5400x7200ish pixels. Also, they usually have personal use only licenses for the digital downloads. So they're not resellable.
