A Guide to Selecting the Best OWYN Only What You Need Protein Drinks
Prioritize Your Protein Source
When selecting an OWYN protein drink, the first thing to consider is the plant-based protein blend. Because these drinks are designed to be 'clean,' they typically utilize a combination of pea, pumpkin seed, and almond proteins. This blend is crucial because it provides a complete amino acid profile, which is essential for muscle repair. If you are an athlete looking for post-workout recovery, look for the versions that offer a higher concentration of protein per serving. If you are looking for a light meal replacement or a snack to bridge the gap between lunch and dinner, a slightly lower protein count may be more appropriate for your caloric needs.
Evaluate the Sweetener and Flavor Profile
One of the standout features of the 'Only What You Need' philosophy is the avoidance of artificial junk. However, even within plant-based drinks, there are differences in how sweetness is achieved. Some varieties may lean more heavily on monk fruit or stevia, which provides a clean finish but can sometimes have a distinct aftertaste. Others might use a more subtle approach. If you are sensitive to the taste of natural sweeteners, pay close attention to flavor profiles like chocolate or vanilla, which tend to mask the natural earthiness of plant proteins more effectively than fruit-based flavors.
Check the Micronutrient Density
A great protein drink shouldn't just give you macros. It should provide meaningful micros. When browsing the selection, look at the added vitamins and minerals. Some OWYN formulations are fortified with Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, and Calcium, making them an excellent choice for those following a strictly vegan lifestyle where these nutrients might otherwise be lacking. If your goal is general wellness, aim for the versions with the most robust vitamin fortification. If you are watching your sodium intake, check the labels to ensure the electrolyte balance is optimized without excessive salt.
Consider Texture and Digestibility
The biggest complaint with plant-based protein is often a 'chalky' or 'gritty' texture. The 'Only What You Need' line aims to solve this by minimizing unnecessary stabilizers. However, the density of the drink can vary based on the ingredients used. Thicker, creamier shakes are better suited as meal replacements, while thinner, more juice-like textures are better for quick hydration and light refreshment. If you have a sensitive stomach, the clean ingredient list of this specific line is your best friend, as it avoids the common dairy-based allergens and artificial gums that often cause digestive distress in traditional protein shakes.
