A Guide to Selecting the Best gerber receiving blankets
Prioritize Fabric Composition and Breathability
The most critical factor when selecting a Gerber receiving blanket is the material. Most high-quality options in this category are crafted from 100% cotton. Cotton is the gold standard for infants because it is naturally hypoallergenic and highly breathable. In a receiving blanket, breathability is a safety feature. It prevents the baby from overheating during sleep or while being swaddled tightly. Look for 'brushed' cotton textures if you want a slightly fuzzier, warmer feel, or standard jersey knits for a smoother, more lightweight option that works well in warmer climates or for layering.
Consider the Weight and Thickness
Not all receiving blankets are created equal in terms of GSM (grams per square meter). Gerber typically offers a range of weights. Lightweight blankets are ideal for summer months or for use as a light layer over a sleep sack. Heavier, more substantial blankets are better suited for use as a base layer during colder months or for providing a cushioned surface during supervised play. If you are looking for a multi-purpose blanket, a medium-weight cotton knit offers the best versatility, providing enough structure for a secure swaddle while remaining easy to fold and pack.
Swaddle Capability and Shape
A receiving blanket's primary job is often swaddling. When evaluating a blanket, consider its dimensions and how it behaves when folded. A blanket that is too small will not allow for a secure wrap, potentially leading to the 'startle reflex' waking the baby. Conversely, a blanket that is too large can become cumbersome. Look for square or slightly rectangular dimensions that allow you to fold the corners inward to create a snug, secure cocoon. The way the fabric holds a fold—meaning it has enough 'grip' without being stiff—is a key indicator of a quality receiving blanket.
Durability and Ease of Maintenance
Infant gear undergoes a rigorous cycle of use and cleaning. A good Gerber blanket should maintain its softness and shape even after dozens of trips through the washing machine and dryer. Avoid blankets with excessive decorative elements like large bows, sequins, or heavy embroidery, as these can become uncomfortable for the baby or fall off during washing. Stick to classic prints or solid colors that are integrated into the weave. High-quality cotton will actually become softer with each wash, making them excellent long-term investments for growing infants.
Safety and Skin Sensitivity
Finally, always ensure the blankets are free from harsh chemical dyes or irritating textures. Because newborns spend much of their time in direct contact with these fabrics, the dye must be stable and non-irritating. Gerber's reputation is built on meeting high safety standards, but as a consumer, you should always look for soft, seamless edges. Rough seams can cause redness or irritation on a baby's delicate skin, so a smooth finish around the perimeter of the blanket is a hallmark of a superior product.
