Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers about 1 Window Valances before you buy.
A valance is a short decorative fabric treatment that covers only the top portion of a window, whereas a full curtain extends from the rod to the windowsill or floor to provide privacy and light control.
Measure the width of your window frame and add 6 to 12 inches to allow for adequate fabric fullness and to ensure the valance covers the hardware.
While valances are primarily decorative, a thicker or layered valance can help obscure the view into a room from certain angles, though they do not offer the same complete privacy as full-length drapes.
Popular styles include box pleat, scalloped, cafe-style, and swag valances, each offering a different aesthetic from modern minimalist to traditional elegance.
Valances are excellent for diffusing harsh overhead light and reducing glare, but they are not designed to block out light entirely like blackout curtains.
Most valances are hung using a decorative curtain rod, a tension rod for recessed windows, or sometimes via integrated rod pockets that slide directly onto a slim pole.
Yes, by mounting the valance several inches above the actual window frame, you create the optical illusion of taller ceilings and larger window spans.
It depends on the material. Lightweight cotton or linen valances are often machine washable, while formal silk or velvet options typically require dry cleaning.
