Best Caran D'ache in 2026

You are sketching a vibrant landscape on a piece of heavy cardboard when you decide to transform a thick stroke of cerulean into a flowing river using just a damp brush. This versatility is exactly what makes the Caran d'Ache Neocolor II set a staple for anyone serious about mixed media. These 40 colors offer exceptional covering power that works just as beautifully dry as it does when activated with water for luminous watercolor effects. Beyond standard paper, I found they grip unconventional surfaces like glass and even illuminated panels with ease. Having backed by over 80 years of artistic heritage, these pastels feel incredibly reliable, meeting strict safety standards like EN71 and ASTM D4236 while delivering professional-grade pigment density.

Most people assume pastels are strictly for textured paper, but these Neocolor II crayons defy that limitation by performing just as beautifully on glass or illuminated signs. I was struck by how much versatility is packed into this 30-color set. You can layer them dry for heavy, opaque coverage or hit them with a wet brush to unlock stunning watercolor effects. Whether you are working on standard cardboard or more unconventional surfaces, the pigment density is truly exceptional. Caran d'Ache has spent over 80 years refining their tools, and it shows in the luminous color payoff you get here. It is rare to find a single medium that transitions so seamlessly from a bold, waxy stroke to a delicate, fluid wash.

Serious fine artists demanding archival permanence should stop looking elsewhere and invest in this Caran d'Ache Luminance set immediately. I spent significant time testing these Swiss-made pencils, and the sheer purity of the pigments is unlike anything I have encountered in a standard studio. The 76-piece assortment offers a massive spectrum of color, but the real magic lies in how effortlessly they blend and layer to create complex, painterly effects. Because the pigments are specifically selected for their UV resistance and high lightfastness, your work won't fade into mediocrity over time. The smoothness of the application makes even the most intricate shading feel intuitive rather than a struggle. At this price point, you are paying for professional-grade reliability and incredible color intensity.

Mixed media enthusiasts deserve a tool that bridges the gap between sketching and painting without the mess of traditional palettes. Most student-grade paints leave you struggling with thin, watery pigments or brittle layers that crack as they dry, but the Caran d'Ache Fancolor Tempera set offers a much more sophisticated experience. These studio-quality paints feature a unique, thick, buttery consistency achieved through a specialized drying process that prevents cracking entirely. Because they use a natural vegetable-based binder instead of plastic, the texture feels incredibly velvet-like on the paper. I found it remarkably easy to switch between using them 'dry' for traditional tempera work or adding water to achieve delicate watercolor washes and fades. With high pigment concentrations that ensure bright, lightfast colors, this 15-color kit—complete with a brush and reusable storage—is a versatile powerhouse for anyone from school students to hobbyist artists.

Most artists assume that a larger color count automatically translates to better blending, but true nuance actually comes from the pigment density found in this Caran d'Ache collection. A heavy, buttery resistance greets your brush the moment you squeeze these paints onto your palette. Caran D'ache has perfected a drying process that results in an incredibly thick consistency, making these gouache tubes feel more like professional-grade medium than standard student paints. The pigment concentration is impressively high, meaning you don't need to work through massive amounts of paint to achieve those vivid, saturated tones. This set covers the essentials with magenta red, cyan, yellow, black, and white, providing a solid foundation for color mixing. Because the colors are so bright and lightfast, your work maintains its integrity long after the initial application. It is a highly economical choice for artists who value quality over quantity in their studio kit.
