Best Hougen in 2026

The Hougen HMD904 Magnetic Drill sets a new benchmark for fabrication with its redesigned, high-performance architecture. This compact 115-volt powerhouse is built for heavy-duty versatility, featuring a two-stage magnet that boosts power by 30% the moment the motor kicks in. I was particularly impressed by the ergonomic, stiffer housing and the slot drive arbor, which makes swapping accessories incredibly fast and accurate. It handles diameters up to 1.5 inches with ease, and the integrated pilot light is a lifesaver in dim shop environments. Because this is a full fabricator kit, you aren't just getting the drill. You're getting a gravity-fed coolant system, a 1/2" drill chuck, and a Rotabroach cutter kit. It is a professional, American-made solution that prioritizes safety with its lift detector and positive slug ejection.

Metal fabrication professionals demanding high-capacity drilling in tight, awkward spaces will find the Hougen HMD130 to be an indispensable upgrade to their toolkit. This ultra-low profile beast manages to pack significant power into a lightweight 23.6-pound frame, making it much easier to maneuver than the older HMD115 or HMD150 models it replaces. I was particularly impressed by the patented quill feed arbor, which ensures incredibly smooth cuts, and the RotaLoc Plus system that lets you swap cutters without hunting for tools. The inclusion of a lift detector safety system and positive slug ejection adds a layer of professional reliability that you just don't find in hobbyist gear. With its versatile feed handle that switches sides easily and high-torque gearing, this kit is built for serious, heavy-duty production work.

Most people assume that more contact between a tool and a workpiece leads to better results, but this Hougen annular cutter actually relies on minimal contact to excel. By utilizing O.D. margins, only a thin strip of material touches the hole's edge, which drastically reduces friction and leaves behind a cleaner finish. The patented Hougen-Edge geometry is a game changer for anyone tired of vibration, as the multi-angle teeth ensure smoother cuts with significantly less chatter. I was particularly impressed by the fully fluted design. It handles chip evacuation effortlessly, meaning you don't have to fight the machine as much during deeper cuts. Even the internal taper helps by making slug ejection much more efficient, though keep in mind you'll need to source a pilot separately.

The Hougen HMD904S Swivel Base Magnetic Drill redefines fabrication precision through its highly adaptable movement capabilities. This tool feels remarkably lightweight yet packs enough power to handle a 1-1/2" x 2" capacity with ease. I was particularly impressed by the swivel base, which allows you to line up pilots perfectly and work in awkward overhead or horizontal positions that usually stall a project. Safety isn't an afterthought here. The lift detector system and a low-profile design keep you protected while working in tight spots. The addition of an LED pilot light is a game-changer for accuracy in dim workshops, and the slot drive arbor makes swapping accessories feel fast and seamless. It is a rugged, USA-made workhorse designed for serious metalwork.
