Best Raw Futons in 2026

Your studio apartment suddenly feels much larger once you swap a bulky traditional bed for this space-saving Colorado Reclaim mocha frame. I spent some time testing the Aspen style setup, and the plantation-grown hardwood construction feels remarkably sturdy for a multi-functional piece. The 7-inch innerspring mattress arrives vacuum-packed, so you’ll need to give it a little breathing room to reach its full thickness, but the hand-tufted suede fabric and cotton density foam provide a surprisingly comfortable surface for both sitting and sleeping. Whether you are lounging in the sofa position or converting it for a guest, the 294 coil hinged spring system offers decent support without the typical sagging found in cheaper alternatives. It is a clever, stylish solution for anyone living in a compact urban environment.

Most people assume a futon mattress is just a glorified, lumpy slab of foam, but the Milliard memory foam model actually challenges that uncomfortable stereotype. Instead of the rigid, spring-filled mattresses that leave you waking up with a backache, this setup uses a strategic layering system. You get a two-inch layer of responsive plush memory foam sitting atop four inches of high-density base support foam. It provides that specific contouring feel we usually only find in much more expensive bed mattresses, yet it stays firm enough that you won't bottom out. The bamboo cover is a massive plus for practical living, as it's completely removable and machine washable. It's a solid upgrade for anyone looking to turn a standard sofa bed into a legitimate sleeping surface.

Most people assume a futon mattress is just a glorified, uncomfortable slab of foam, but the Milliard memory foam model actually challenges that expectation. Instead of the rigid, springy feel found in cheaper alternatives, this mattress uses a layered approach that feels surprisingly premium. You get a two-inch layer of responsive plush memory foam sitting atop four inches of high-density base support foam, which prevents that dreaded sensation of bottoming out. The 2.5 lbs. density ensures it maintains its shape over time, making it a legitimate sleeping surface rather than just a temporary fix. Plus, the grey bamboo cover is a lifesaver because it’s entirely removable and washable, which is essential for any piece of furniture doubling as a sofa.

Hostile guest rooms and uncomfortable sofa beds are officially a thing of the past with the Milliard Memory Foam Futon Mattress. Most futons rely on stiff, unforgiving springs that leave you tossing and turning, but this setup uses a sophisticated dual-layer approach. You get a two-inch layer of responsive, plush memory foam sitting atop four inches of high-density base support foam, which provides that perfect balance of contouring comfort and solid lift. The 2.5 lbs. density foam is built to last without bottoming out, making it a reliable choice for long-term use. I also love that the light grey bamboo cover is completely removable and machine washable, so you don't have to stress about keeping the furniture pristine after a busy weekend of hosting.

The Gorilla Grip Original Mattress Slide Stopper is the definitive fix for the annoying midnight slide of heavy mattresses. I found that its dual-sided grip technology is the real hero here, creating a firm connection between your mattress and the box spring that actually holds up under weight. The open weave construction is a thoughtful touch because it allows for essential airflow, preventing that trapped moisture feeling often found with cheaper, solid rubber alternatives. Setting it up is incredibly straightforward—just lift the bed, lay the pad down, and reset. Since it is designed to be trimmed with standard scissors, you can customize the fit for odd-sized furniture or ensure it stays hidden beneath the mattress for a seamless look.

Small apartments often force a frustrating compromise between having a proper seating area and maintaining a guest bed.
