A Guide to Selecting the Best meeden art painting kits
Analyze the Medium and Pigment Quality
The most critical decision factor is the medium itself. Meeden offers kits centered around different disciplines, including watercolor, oil, and acrylic. When selecting a kit, look closely at the pigment concentration. In high-quality watercolor kits, you want to see descriptions that imply lightfastness—the ability of the color to resist fading over time. For oil painting enthusiasts, the kit should ideally include a balanced range of primary colors plus essential earth tones. Avoid kits that offer an excessive number of colors but very small tubes. It is far better to have twelve high-quality, highly pigmented tubes than forty diluted, chalky ones. A kit that prioritizes professional-grade pigment density will allow you to layer colors effectively without the paint turning muddy.
Evaluate Brush Versatility and Bristle Type
A painting kit is only as good as the tools used to apply the medium. When reviewing these kits, pay attention to the brush composition. For watercolor kits, look for synthetic or natural hair brushes that offer excellent water retention and a fine point for detail work. For oil or acrylic sets, you will want sturdier, more resilient bristles—often synthetic taklon or natural hog hair—that can withstand the thicker consistency of the paint. A well-rounded kit should provide a variety of shapes: flat brushes for large washes and coverage, round brushes for controlled lines, and perhaps a filbert for blending. If a kit only provides one or two brush shapes, you will likely find yourself needing to purchase additional tools immediately.
Consider the Substrate and Surface Compatibility
Many premium kits include a starter surface, such as heavy-weight watercolor paper or primed canvases. This is a major decision factor for beginners. If you are choosing a watercolor kit, ensure the paper included is at least 300gsm (grams per square meter). Anything thinner will buckle and warp as soon as it touches water. For oil or acrylic kits, check if the canvases are pre-primed with gesso. A pre-primed surface prevents the oil from seeping into the fabric fibers, which can rot the canvas over time. If a kit does not include a surface, ensure the paints provided are compatible with the materials you already own at home.
Assess the Kit’s Completeness for Your Skill Level
The logic of your purchase should follow your current proficiency. For absolute beginners, look for 'all-in-one' kits that include secondary necessities like a palette, a mixing tray, or a small easel. These kits are designed to get you painting within minutes of opening the box. For those with some experience, look for 'refill' or 'specialty' kits that focus on specific color palettes or advanced brush sets. Avoid the temptation of the largest, most expensive kit if it contains many tools you won't use. Instead, aim for a kit that offers a logical progression of tools that match the specific medium you intend to master.

Quick answers about Meeden Art Painting Kits before you buy.
Most kits come complete with a pre-printed canvas, a set of high-pigment acrylic paints, necessary brushes, and a reference guide to help you navigate the painting process.
Yes, these kits are specifically designed for beginners. The pre-marked canvases remove the guesswork of proportions, allowing you to focus on color blending and brush technique.
Completion time varies based on the complexity of the design and your pace, but most users find they can finish a piece in anywhere from two to six hours.
While the kits are comprehensive, you may want to have a water cup for cleaning brushes and a palette or paper plate for mixing colors, though some premium kits include these.
Absolutely. As long as you clean them thoroughly with soap and water immediately after use, the brushes are durable enough for multiple painting sessions.
Ensure the lids are screwed on tightly to prevent drying. Store them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to maintain their consistency.
The canvases are intended for single-use art projects. Once a design is painted, the surface is saturated with acrylic, making it difficult to paint over without heavy priming.
If the paint is still wet, you can gently blot it with a damp cloth. If it has dried, you can layer a new color directly over the mistake once it is fully set.
