Best Department 56 Decorative Hanging Ornaments in 2026

Evaluate the Level of Detail and Materiality

The hallmark of a high-quality Department 56 ornament is the precision of its sculpt. When browsing, look closely at the facial expressions of characters, the texture of clothing, and the architectural integrity of miniature buildings. Because these are hanging pieces, they are often viewed from multiple angles. Premium ornaments will feature painted details that are consistent across the entire piece, not just the front. Pay attention to the material composition. While most are high-grade resin, the way the paint is applied—whether it has a matte, hand-painted finish or a subtle luster—can significantly impact how the ornament catches the light on a tree or a display stand.

Consider Scale and Collection Cohesion

One of the biggest mistakes collectors make is purchasing ornaments in isolation without considering their relationship to existing pieces. Department 56 is built on the concept of themed storytelling. If you are building a holiday scene, ensure the ornament you choose aligns with the aesthetic of your current collection, such as the Victorian charm of the Dickens Village or the snowy, whimsical vibe of the North Pole series. Furthermore, consider the scale. Some ornaments are designed to be statement pieces that hang prominently, while others are smaller, intended to fill gaps in a dense miniature village display. If you plan to hang these on a standard-sized holiday tree, ensure the weight is balanced so the branches do not sag excessively.

Assess Durability and Hanging Mechanisms

Since these are decorative items intended for display, the integrity of the hanging loop is crucial. Examine the attachment point where the string or hook connects to the ornament. In some delicate resin pieces, the hanging point can be a structural weak spot. Look for ornaments where the loop is integrated seamlessly into the design rather than being an afterthought. Additionally, consider how you intend to display them. Some collectors prefer using traditional hooks, while others use clear fishing line to create a 'floating' effect. Knowing the weight of the ornament will help you decide which hanging method will best showcase the piece without risking damage to the delicate resin edges.

Identify Collectibility and Theme

Deciding whether to buy for personal enjoyment or for long-term collection value is a key decision factor. Many enthusiasts seek out limited-edition releases or seasonal specialties that are only produced for a short window. If you are a collector, look for themes that resonate with your personal history or aesthetic preferences. A cohesive collection—one that follows a specific era, holiday, or architectural style—tends to be more visually satisfying and holds its character much better than a random assortment of disparate designs. Always check if the ornament is part of a specific series, as this allows you to expand your display logically over time.
