Prioritize Fabric Composition and Stretch
The most critical factor in selecting leggings for active girls is the fabric blend. You will typically encounter two main types: pure cotton blends and synthetic performance blends. Cotton-rich leggings are ideal for everyday lounging and casual school days because the natural fibers are breathable and soft against sensitive skin. However, pure cotton tends to lose its shape after several hours of wear, often resulting in 'baggy knees.'
For more vigorous activities like gymnastics, dance, or soccer, look for synthetic blends containing nylon or polyester mixed with a high percentage of spandex or elastane. These materials offer superior 'recovery,' meaning the leggings snap back to their original shape after being stretched. A high spandex content ensures the leggings remain opaque (not see-through) even when the child is bending or squatting.
Evaluate Waistband Construction
A waistband can make or break the comfort of a legging. For younger girls, a soft, wide elastic waistband is often preferable as it distributes pressure evenly around the stomach, preventing the digging or pinching that can cause distraction during class. Look for 'encased' elastic, where the elastic is sewn inside a fabric tunnel, rather than exposed elastic which can irritate the skin.
For older girls or those involved in competitive sports, a high-rise waistband provides better coverage and stays in place during movement. If you are buying for a child who is particularly sensitive to textures, seek out 'brushed' interiors or seamless waistband designs that minimize friction and prevent chafing.
Consider Durability and Maintenance
Since girls' leggings are high-use items, they face the ultimate test in the laundry. To ensure longevity, check the weight of the fabric. A slightly thicker knit (often referred to as 'interlock' knit) is more resistant to pilling—those tiny annoying fuzz balls that appear on the surface of the fabric—and is less likely to develop holes in the inner thigh area.
Colorfastness is also a key consideration. Darker colors like navy, black, or deep burgundy are excellent for hiding stains from playground dirt or grass, but ensure the fabric quality is high enough that these colors don't bleed into lighter clothing during the first few washes. Opt for machine-washable materials that can handle high-temperature cycles if you need to sanitize them after outdoor play.
Sizing for Growth and Movement
Children grow at unpredictable rates, which makes sizing a strategic decision. When in doubt, sizing up slightly is often a better move than sizing down. A slightly loose legging can be worn as a base layer under skirts or dresses, whereas a legging that is too tight can restrict circulation and become uncomfortable very quickly. Pay close attention to the length. If a child is between sizes, look for '7/8 length' options which can serve as full-length leggings for shorter children or cropped styles for taller ones, offering more versatility as they grow.
