  • Dichondra repens is one of the easiest ground cover plants to establish from seed. It is grown as a perennial in USDA Zones 7 – 11 and has a prostrate or creeping growth habit with circular leaves. It grows very close to the ground, (usually not over 2 inches tall) and is a warm season fast growing ground cover. It is adapted to warmer climates, but will retain its striking green color during winter temperatures as low as 20 - 25 degrees Farenheit with only slight leaf browning.
  • It only reaches 2 - 3 inches in maximum height and never needs mowed making it a perfect lawn alternative. Dichondra has broad, almost circular leaves (looks similar to clover) and when mowed low establishes a thick dense carpet look. Dichondra is now used in many ground cover situations where normal grasses may not do as well. It has a bright green color and a very good feel underfoot.
  • Beautiful in landscaping areas of no maintenance where adapted, and does not need to be mowed. When used in lawn situations it can be mowed for an even, smooth finish. Dichondra Repens is commonly called Kidney Weed, Dichondra Pony Foot, or Lawn Leaf. It grows so easily from ground cover seeds that it can be used as a lawn alternative to create a Dichondra Repens lawn.
  • Many people use dichondra as a lawn alternative. Therefore, you can mow your dichondra to the height you want to maintain it at. For the nicest appearance if dichondra, mow approximately every two weeks at a height of 1 1/2" - 2" during the summer months and you can mow as low as 3/4" during the winter months.
  • Plant 1 pound of seed per 500 square feet. These seeds are heirloom and non gmo.

Outsidepride Dichondra Repens is the ultimate low-maintenance solution for anyone tired of the endless mowing cycle. This kidney weed creates a lush, bright green carpet that stays incredibly low to the ground, typically hovering under two inches. It is a fast-growing, warm-season perennial that thrives in USDA Zones 7 through 11, making it a sturdy alternative to traditional turf in warmer climates. You can let it grow naturally for a soft, clover-like look, or mow it every two weeks to maintain a manicured, dense finish. Even when temperatures dip toward 20 degrees Fahrenheit, this heirloom, non-GMO seed holds its color remarkably well. It feels wonderful underfoot and fills in gaps where standard grass often struggles to take hold.

It thrives in the shade and handles drought remarkably well, making it a hardy choice for northern climates and transition zones. I love how versatile it is. You can use it to establish a low-maintenance, naturalized meadow that requires almost zero upkeep, or use it for traditional erosion control on banks where other grasses fail. With a generous seeding rate of four to five pounds per thousand square feet, it provides a dense, reliable cover that actually stays put.

  • Plume grass has tall, arching stems make this one of the largest and most popular ornamental grasses. Also known as Ravennae Grass and Hardy Pampas Grass, it one of the tallest ornamental grasses that is hardy above Zone 6.
  • Plume grass is a 6 foot tall perennial growing in USDA zones 5 - 10.
  • Plume grass is readily used as a substitute for Pampas grass in the northern regions. The gray-green leaves reach a height of about 5 feet, but in late summer large, beige, feather duster like plumes reach skyward, achieving impressive heights of 6 feet.
  • These plumes are often used in fresh and dried flower arrangements. A mature clump may number as many as 50 of these plumes. Then in autumn, foliage and stems turn from pale green to varying shades of bronze and red throughout the plant.
  • Sow 5 - 6 seeds per plant to begin growing this very tall ornamental grass.

  • Crystal BlueLinks Creeping Bentgrass had the highest turf quality, averaged across all locations, during the NTEP fairway/tee trials. This bent grass variety has a different bluegreen color and has shown good resistance to brown patch and dollar spot. Crystal BlueLinks creeping bentgrass has also shown good heat tolerance and shade tolerance unlike other creeping bent grasses.
  • Crystal BlueLinks with its semi-erect growth habit, aggressive recovery, and great disease resistance makes it an excellent choice for greens, tees, and fairways. It has very good winter color, quick spring green-up, heat and cold tolerance, and has shown excellent shade tolerance. Crystal Bluelinks provides a superb putting surface, has great recovery, and was the #1 Commercial Variety in the Preliminary NTEP Fairway Data.
  • Crystal Bluelink's cold and heat tolerance is exceptional. It can be used throughout the Northern U.S. including Alaska. It can be used throughout the transition zone in very hot states like Kanas and is used as far South as Palm Springs and many other Southern states. Crystal Bluelinks creeping bent grass can be mowed below 1/8" for putting greens or for fairway use it can be happy at 3/4".
  • Excellent shade tolerance! Yes, that is correct. A creeping bent grass with excellent shade tolerance. Crystal Bluelinks creeping bent grass is #1 in NTEP data by a long run for shade. This bent grass can grow in as little as 3 hours of direct sunlight a day and possibly even less if conditions are right. In fact, this creeping bent grass is more shade tolerant than our True Putt creeping blue grass.
  • Seeding rate: Sow 1 - 1 1/2 pounds of Crystal Links bent grass putting green seed per 1,000 square feet. Plant Creeping Bentgrass seed when soil temperature reaches 55 degrees in spring up until a minimum of 6 weeks before frost in fall.

Most golfers settle for patchy, uneven turf that ruins a good stroke, but Crystal Bluelinks offers the professional-grade smoothness typically reserved for elite courses. This variety stands out because it actually conquered the NTEP fairway trials, ranking as the number one commercial variety for quality. I was particularly impressed by its shade tolerance. Unlike most creeping bentgrasses that fail without full sun, this can thrive on as little as three hours of direct light. Whether you are mowing down to a tight 1/8 inch for a putting surface or keeping it at 3/4 inch for a fairway, the aggressive recovery and resistance to brown patch make it incredibly resilient. It handles extreme temperature swings from Alaska to the transition zone with ease, ensuring your greens stay vibrant and consistent year-round.

A Guide to Selecting the Best OutsidePride Grass Seed

A Guide to Selecting the Best OutsidePride Grass Seed

Understanding Grass Species and Varieties

The most critical decision you will make is choosing the right species for your region. Grasses are generally categorized into cool-season and warm-season varieties. If you live in northern climates with milder winters, you should focus on cool-season blends which include Kentucky Bluegrass, Perennial Ryegrass, and Fine Fescue. These varieties thrive in lower temperatures and provide that classic deep-green aesthetic. Conversely, if you reside in southern or subtropical regions, you will need warm-season options like Bermudagrass or Zoysia, which enter dormancy during the winter but dominate during the heat of summer. OutsidePride offers various blends, so always check the primary species listed on the packaging to ensure it aligns with your local growing zone.

Analyzing Seed Composition and Purity

Not all seed bags are created equal. When reviewing a product, look closely at the composition. A 'pure' seed product contains only one species, which is excellent for specific landscaping needs but can be vulnerable to single-threat pests or diseases. A 'blend' is often a smarter choice for residential lawns because it offers biological diversity. If one species struggles with a particular fungus, the others in the mix will maintain the lawn's integrity. Crucially, check the purity percentage. You want a high percentage of actual seed and a very low percentage of 'other crop seed' or weed seeds. High-quality seed should have a high germination rate—look for anything above 85% to ensure you aren't wasting time and effort on seeds that won't sprout.

Evaluating Traffic Tolerance and Shade Resistance

/*The environment your lawn inhabits dictates its durability. If your lawn is a playground for children or a pathway for pets, you need a high-traffic variety. Perennial Ryegrass is often a staple in these blends due to its rapid germination and ability to withstand physical wear. If your yard is bordered by large trees or north-facing walls, a standard sun-loving blend will fail, leaving you with bare spots. In these cases, prioritize 'Shade Tolerant' labels, which typically indicate a higher concentration of Fine Fescues that can photosynthesize effectively in lower light conditions.*/

Growth Rate vs. Longevity

There is often a trade-off between how fast a lawn grows and how long it lasts. Some varieties are designed for 'quick cover,' meaning they sprout rapidly to prevent soil erosion, but they may require more frequent mowing and reseeding. Other varieties are slower to establish but develop deep, complex root systems that make them much more drought-resistant and long-lasting. When choosing your OutsidePride seed, decide if your priority is immediate visual gratification or a low-maintenance, long-term solution. For most homeowners, a balanced blend that offers moderate germination speed with high durability provides the best return on investment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about Outsidepride Grass Seed before you buy.

Select your seed based on sun exposure and foot traffic. Shade-tolerant blends work best under trees, while high-traffic mixes are engineered for durability in lawns used for pets or play.

For most cool-season grasses, early autumn is ideal as it allows roots to establish before winter. Warm-season grasses perform best when planted in late spring or early summer.

It is generally recommended to use a 'starter fertilizer' high in phosphorus to encourage rapid root development, rather than a standard high-nitrogen lawn food.

Keep the soil surface consistently moist but not waterlogged. Light, frequent misting is better than heavy soaking to prevent the seeds from washing away or drying out.

While you may see tiny sprouts within 7 to 14 days, it typically takes several weeks for the grass to establish a dense, uniform carpet.

Yes, you can overseed an existing lawn to fill in bare patches. Simply mow the existing grass short and rake the area to ensure the new seed makes direct contact with the soil.

Most grass seeds should be sown no deeper than 1/8 to 1/4 inch. If the seed is buried too deep, it will struggle to reach the surface and may fail to germinate.
