For players of resonator guitars, particularly those utilizing Dobro-style instruments, the quest for the perfect tone often leads to a realization: the metal cone is the heart of the sound, but the pickups are the voice that translates that mechanical energy into an electric signal. Selecting the right pickups for a Dobro is a specialized task that differs significantly from choosing standard Stratocaster or Les Paul replacements. You aren't just looking for volume. You are looking for a way to capture the complex, metallic, and percussive transients that make a resonator unique without losing the 'bark' or introducing unwanted microphonic feedback.

You might hesitate to spend money on tiny hardware components, wondering if they are actually worth the effort of a replacement. However, the Dopro mounting kit offers a practical solution for musicians dealing with stripped or lost hardware on their P Bass, J Bass, or P90 soap bar pickups. These black screws feature a compact 4.2mm head diameter, which is specifically designed to maintain compatibility with most standard bass setups. The set includes 20 screws measuring 36mm in total length and matching 26mm springs. While the manufacturer is upfront that these are aftermarket parts that may differ slightly from your original factory hardware, they provide a reliable way to secure your electronics. Just be sure to double-check your specific pickup dimensions before buying to ensure a perfect fit.

If you are trying to refresh a Les Paul style guitar that isn't a Gibson, these are specifically tailored for that fit. The matte black finish on these Dopro rings provides an immediate, sleek aesthetic upgrade to any guitar body. These aren't universal fit-all solutions, so you need to be precise: they are specifically designed for Epiphone Les Pauls or similar humbucker configurations rather than standard Gibson models. The set includes a thinner 3x5mm frame for the neck and a taller 7x9mm frame for the bridge, accommodating the varying heights required for a clean installation. With a pickup space of 70x39.3mm and a 78mm screw spacing, the fit is quite snug for compatible hardware. Just keep in mind that you will need to supply your own mounting screws to complete the job, as they aren't included in the package.

The matte black finish on these Dopro mounting frames provides an immediate aesthetic upgrade to any guitar body that needs a visual refresh. These aren't universal fit-alls, so you need to pay close attention to the specific dimensions before ordering. They are designed specifically for Epiphone Les Pauls or similar humbucker-equipped guitars rather than standard Gibson models. The set includes a slim 3x5mm frame for the neck position and a taller 7x9mm frame for the bridge, ensuring your pickups sit at the correct height. Just keep in mind that you will need to provide your own mounting screws to complete the installation. If your pickup measurements match the 70x39.3mm requirement, these rings offer a clean, professional look for a very reasonable price.
Most guitarists assume a cosmetic upgrade is just a matter of aesthetics, but replacing your pickup covers is actually a precise technical undertaking. These Dopro chrome plastic covers offer a sleek way to refresh a worn-out Stratocaster, provided you do the homework first. With a top length of 70.5mm and a bottom length of 84mm, they fit the standard silhouette, but the real dealbreaker is the 50mm pole spacing. You cannot simply swap these out without verifying that your existing pickups align perfectly with that measurement. If your spacing is off, these won't sit right, but when they do match, the 76.5mm screw distance ensures a clean, professional installation that instantly brightens up your instrument's look.
Dopro Chrome Plastic Stratocaster Single Coil Pickup Covers offer an immediate aesthetic refresh for any worn-out electric guitar. These three covers are constructed from durable plastic with a polished chrome finish that catches the light beautifully on stage. Measuring 70.5mm at the top and 84mm at the bottom, they provide a sleek, low-profile look with a 13mm height. The most critical aspect to keep in mind is the pole spacing. You can choose between 48mm, 50mm, or 52mm options to ensure a perfect match. Because the mounting screw distance is fixed at 76.5mm center-to-center, these are a straightforward way to modernize your instrument's appearance without a massive overhaul. Just double-check your specific pickup dimensions before buying to avoid any alignment headaches.
Ever felt the frustration of a Jazz Bass pickup constantly shifting its position mid-set? The Dopro adjustment pads solve this common tonal headache by providing a stable, custom foundation directly against your instrument's body. Unlike traditional setups that rely on bulky mounting rings, these pads use a simple self-adhesive backing for a much cleaner installation. I found the inclusion of four springs particularly clever, as they act as a mechanical lock to keep your height exactly where you dialed it in. Because the material is customizable, you can easily trim the 2-3/8" x 11/16" dimensions to fit your specific Jazzmaster or J Bass configuration perfectly. It is a small, inexpensive tweak that offers significant stability for your signal.
Most guitarists settle for muddy, lackluster neck tones when they aren't careful about their pickup selection, but the Dopro Chrome Cover Single Coil changes that dynamic entirely. This ceramic magnet pickup is engineered specifically for the Telecaster neck position, delivering that classic, standard rhythm sound that defines the genre. With a resistance of 6.8K and an inductance of 1.64H, it strikes a professional balance between clarity and warmth. The 50mm pole spacing ensures a proper fit for standard setups, and the inclusion of mounting screws and springs makes the installation process remarkably straightforward. At this price point, it offers a polished, chrome-finished upgrade that breathes new life into your instrument without requiring a massive investment.

Your worn-out Les Paul deserves a visual facelift that actually fits the technical realities of your instrument. Replacing pickup covers is often a headache because of mismatched pole spacing, but this Dopro set solves that specific headache by providing two different sizes in one package. You get a 50mm spacing cover for the neck and a 52mm spacing cover for the bridge, ensuring the brass construction aligns perfectly with your string layout. At roughly 2.75 inches wide, these covers offer a substantial, premium feel thanks to the heavy brass material. It is a straightforward, budget-friendly way to refresh the aesthetic of your guitar without worrying about the common compatibility errors that plague most aftermarket hardware.

Dopro Quality humbucker pickup covers
Package includes: two Humbucker pickup covers with two different pole spacing
Dopro's brass humbucker covers offer a high-end aesthetic upgrade for guitarists looking to refresh their instrument's appearance without breaking the bank. These aren't your standard generic replacements. Because they are crafted from solid brass, they provide a substantial feel and a sleek black finish that looks professional on any build. The set is specifically designed to solve the headache of mismatched hardware by including two distinct pole spacings: a 49.2mm neck spacing and a 52mm bridge spacing. At roughly 2.75 inches long, they fit standard dimensions perfectly, but you absolutely must measure your existing pole centers before committing. It is a smart, budget-friendly way to give a worn-out set of pickups a premium, customized look.
Replacing a worn-out pickup cover is often overlooked, yet it is one of the fastest ways to refresh the aesthetic of a beat-up instrument. These Dopro cream-colored covers offer a surprisingly professional finish for such an affordable set. While they are designed to fit most Mexican and USA-made Precision Basses, you really need to double-check your specific measurements before committing. The dimensions are precise, featuring a 62mm mounting screw hole distance and 28.6mm pole spacing, which ensures a snug fit for standard 4-string setups. For under eight dollars, getting a four-pack of durable plastic covers is a no-brainer if you are looking to clean up the look of your bass without a massive investment in hardware.
A Guide to Selecting the Best Dobro Guitar Pickups
Understanding the Resonator Sonic Profile
Before diving into technical specifications, you must understand what you are trying to capture. A Dobro produces a sound rich in mid-range frequencies and sharp, percussive attacks. Unlike a hollow-body electric guitar, which has a warm, blooming sustain, a resonator has a faster decay and a more 'nasal' or 'twangy' character. When selecting pickups, your goal is to find a component that complements this inherent brightness rather than fighting it. If you choose a pickup that is too dark or bass-heavy, you risk burying the very character that makes the instrument special. Conversely, a pickup with too much high-end treble can make the instrument sound thin and shrill, especially when playing through a tube amplifier.
Single-Coil vs. Humbucker Configurations
The most fundamental decision in your search will be the coil configuration. Many traditional resonator guitars utilize single-coil pickups, which are excellent for capturing the bright, biting clarity required for bluegrass and delta blues. Single-coils offer a high degree of 'snap' and definition. However, because resonator guitars are often played at high volumes or in close proximity to loud acoustic resonance, single-coils can be prone to 60-cycle hum and electromagnetic interference.
If your playing style leans toward heavier blues-rock or if you plan to use high-gain amplification, a humbucker-style pickup may be the superior choice. Humbuckers provide a thicker, more compressed signal that can tame the aggressive transients of the metal cone, offering a smoother, more sustained output. When deciding, ask yourself: Do I want the raw, piercing clarity of a single-coil, or the controlled, creamy warmth of a humbucker?
Magnet Type and Output Levels
The type of magnet used in the pickup—typically Alnico or Ceramic—will drastically alter the output and tonal texture. Alnico magnets (Alnico II or V are common) are favored by purists for their musical, vintage-voiced response. They tend to have a softer attack and a more 'organic' feel that pairs beautifully with the mechanical vibration of a resonator cone. Ceramic magnets, on the other hand, offer higher output and a more aggressive, modern punch. While ceramic magnets can provide more 'oomph' for lead playing, they can sometimes feel a bit sterile or harsh on a resonator instrument.
Output level is equally critical. Because the resonator cone itself provides a level of natural acoustic compression, you generally do not need extremely high-output 'hot' pickups. An over-wound pickup can muddy the intricate details of your fingerpicking. Aim for a medium-output pickup that maintains a wide dynamic range, allowing the nuances of your playing to pass through to the amplifier.
Mounting and Physical Compatibility
Finally, do not overlook the physical requirements of your instrument. Resonator pickups often come in specialized shapes designed to sit flush against the body or near the bridge/cone area. Ensure that the pickup dimensions match your existing mounting holes or that you are prepared to perform necessary modifications to the pickguard or body. Some pickups are designed to be mounted directly to the resonator cover, which can change the way the vibrations are picked up compared to traditional body mounting.

Quick answers about Dopro Guitar Pickups before you buy.
Single-coil pickups offer a bright, clear, and thin tone ideal for blues and funk, while humbuckers use two coils to cancel electrical noise, providing a warmer, thicker, and higher-output sound perfect for rock and metal.
Metal covers can slightly dampen high-end frequencies, adding a subtle warmth or 'darkness' to the sound, whereas plastic covers have negligible impact on the tonal profile.
Generally, no. Humbuckers are physically larger and require specific routing in the guitar body. You would need to install a pickguard or body modification to accommodate them.
Output refers to the strength of the signal sent to your amplifier. High-output pickups are better for heavy distortion, while low-output pickups offer more clarity and dynamic range for clean playing.
Yes, installing pickups is a permanent electrical modification that requires soldering wires to your volume/tone pots or output jack to ensure a solid connection.
In most cases, yes. You can replace the pickups themselves, though you may need to adjust the wiring to match the new pickup's configuration (e.g., switching from 4-conductor to 2-conductor wires).
Consider your genre: choose single-coils for vintage clarity and twang, or humbuckers if you require high gain and noise reduction for heavier genres.
While most standard pickups follow universal sizing, some boutique or vintage-spec guitars use non-standard dimensions. Always verify the physical measurements of your current pickups before purchasing replacements.
