To sow the seeds indoors, place the seeds on top of the medium in your seed flat. Do not cover the seeds; they need light to germinate. They should sprout within 14 to 21 days at room temperature or slightly warmer (68 to 75°F). Transplant into the garden or container when they have at least 2 sets of true leaves.

This beautiful purple basil grows vigorously and makes an excellent container plant. The flavor is quite strong, relatively sweet, and makes a lovely addition to any dish that uses basil. Add it to vinegar and it imparts a purple tinge. I have found it to be great in pesto as it does not lose it's purple color when crushed.
