A Guide to Selecting the Best crossroads jar candles
Understanding Wax Composition
The foundation of any high-quality jar candle is the wax. The type of wax used dictates how the candle burns, how the scent is released, and how long the candle lasts. Soy wax is a perennial favorite for jar candles because it is renewable, biodegradable, and offers a slow, clean burn that minimizes soot. However, soy can sometimes struggle with 'scent throw'—the ability to fill a room with fragrance. Paraffin wax, while derived from petroleum, is often used by scent enthusiasts because it holds fragrance oils exceptionally well and disperses scent more aggressively. For those seeking a premium experience, coconut wax blends are gaining popularity. They offer the cleanliness of soy with a much smoother melt pool and superior fragrance dispersal. When shopping, always check the label to see if the candle uses a single wax or a sophisticated blend.
The Importance of Scent Throw: Cold vs. Hot
One of the most common mistakes in buying jar candles is focusing solely on how the candle smells in the jar (the 'cold throw') rather than how it smells when lit (the 'hot throw'). A candle may smell divine while sitting on your shelf, but if the wax doesn't reach the necessary temperature to vaporize the fragrance oils, it will fail to scent your room. Look for candles that specify high-quality fragrance oils. If you are purchasing for a large living area, prioritize candles with a strong hot throw. For smaller spaces like bathrooms or bedside tables, a more subtle, delicate scent profile is often preferable to avoid olfactory fatigue.
Wick Material and Burn Quality
The wick is the engine of your candle. In jar candles, the wick must be perfectly centered and sized appropriately for the diameter of the jar. Cotton wicks are the industry standard, offering a reliable and predictable flame. If you prefer a more artisanal or 'rustic' look, wood wicks are an excellent alternative. They provide a gentle crackling sound similar to a tiny fireplace, adding an auditory layer to your ambiance. However, be aware that wood wicks require more maintenance, such as trimming the charred edges to prevent smoking. Regardless of the material, the goal is to achieve a 'full melt pool'—where the melted wax reaches all the way to the edges of the jar during the first burn. This prevents 'tunneling,' a common issue where the candle burns a narrow hole down the center, wasting much of the wax.
Vessel Aesthetics and Safety
Because jar candles are often kept as decor long after the wax is gone, the vessel matters. Glass is the most common choice due to its heat resistance and clarity, allowing you to see the beautiful melt pool. Ceramic or stoneware jars offer a more opaque, high-end look and can be repurposed as planters or desk organizers once empty. When selecting a jar, ensure it is thick enough to withstand heat without cracking. Always place your jar candle on a heat-resistant surface and never leave it unattended, as the glass itself can become extremely hot during extended burn sessions.

Quick answers about Crossroads Jar Candles before you buy.
Look for an even melt pool that reaches the edges of the jar without tunneling. High-quality blends, such as soy or coconut wax, typically offer a cleaner burn and a more consistent scent throw than cheap paraffin alternatives.
Black smoke is usually caused by a wick that is too long or a draft in the room. Always trim your wick to about a quarter-inch before every lighting to ensure a steady, clean flame.
Scent throw refers to how effectively a candle fills a room with its fragrance (hot throw when lit, cold throw when unlit), while scent strength refers to the intensity of the aroma itself.
The first time you light a new jar candle, allow it to burn long enough for the entire top layer of wax to melt to the edges. This creates a 'memory burn' that prevents a deep hole from forming.
No candle should ever be left unattended. Ensure your jar is placed on a heat-resistant surface away from flammable objects, drafts, and children or pets.
Longevity depends on the wax type and jar size, but a high-quality soy jar candle usually offers 40 to 60 hours of burn time per ounce of wax.
Yes. Once the wax is fully cooled, you can carefully remove the remaining residue with warm soapy water, making the jar perfect for storage or decor.
An excessive flicker often indicates a drafty environment or a wick that has become too long. Move the candle to a still area and trim the wick to stabilize the flame.
