A Guide to Selecting the Best Buffalo Games Jigsaw Puzzles
Piece Count and Complexity Scaling
The first decision factor when browsing Buffalo Games is the piece count, which dictates both the time commitment and the difficulty level. Their catalog typically ranges from quick 300-piece builds to marathon-length 2,000-piece challenges. When choosing, consider the 'density' of the image. A 500-piece puzzle featuring a large, clear sky will be significantly easier than a 500-piece puzzle featuring a dense forest or a complex mosaic pattern. For beginners or children, look for higher contrast images with distinct color blocks. For advanced solvers, seek out high-detail scenes where the color transitions are subtle, requiring more focus on shape rather than just hue.
Image Themes and Licensing
One of the standout features of this brand is its thematic diversity. You aren't limited to just landscapes. You can dive into specific sub-genres. If you are a fan of pop culture, look for their licensed collections which feature iconic imagery from films and television. If you prefer a sense of calm, their nature and animal series offer high-resolution photography that makes the assembly process feel like an exploration. For those who enjoy a challenge in pattern recognition, their 'gradient' or abstract collections provide a much steeper learning curve than their traditional scenic views. Match the theme to your current mood: relaxing scenery for stress relief, or complex patterns for mental stimulation.
Material Quality and 'Fit' Reliability
A puzzle is only as good as its last piece fitting perfectly. Buffalo Games is known for using high-quality, thick cardboard that resists bending and fraying. When evaluating a selection, look for descriptions of their precision cutting. A high-quality puzzle should have 'snug' fits, meaning the pieces click together without leaving awkward gaps or feeling overly loose. This is particularly important for larger piece counts where even a millimeter of error can lead to frustration during the final stages of assembly. The matte finish on many of their puzzles is also a key feature, as it reduces glare from overhead lights, making it easier to distinguish subtle color shifts.
Box Art and Reference Utility
Never underestimate the importance of the box art. In the world of Buffalo Games, the box serves as your primary reference tool. Look for puzzles where the box art is crisp and clearly shows the fine details of the image. A high-quality reference image makes it much easier to identify small, repetitive patterns. Additionally, consider the physical size of the finished product. Ensure you have a dedicated surface—such as a puzzle board or a specific dining table—that can accommodate the dimensions of the completed image before you break the seal on the box.
