Best Velour Patio Bench Covers in 2026

Prioritizing Fabric Composition and Weight

When shopping for velour covers, the most critical factor is the composition of the fabric. You aren't just looking for a 'velvet feel'. You are looking for a synthetic blend—typically polyester or acrylic—that has been treated to mimic the softness of velour while maintaining outdoor durability. Avoid 100% cotton velour, as it will absorb moisture like a sponge, leading to heavy, sodden cushions and potential rot. Instead, look for high-density microfibers that offer a 'crushed' or 'plush' texture. This texture is beneficial because it hides minor imperfections and resists the visible settling of dust better than a flat-weave fabric. A heavier weight (measured in grams per square meter) generally indicates a more substantial cover that will drape elegantly over the bench rather than clinging to the frame.

Water Repellency vs. True Waterproofing

It is vital to distinguish between water-resistant and waterproof covers. Most velour-style covers are designed to be water-resistant, meaning they feature a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) coating that causes rain to bead up and roll off. This is ideal for light showers and dew. However, if your bench is subject to heavy downpours or sits in a high-humidity environment, you must look for covers with a laminated backing. A laminated interior provides a physical barrier that prevents moisture from seeping through the soft pile and into the cushion foam. Without this secondary layer, the velour will act as a wick, pulling moisture directly into your furniture's core.

UV Resistance and Color Fastness

The primary enemy of soft-touch outdoor fabrics is ultraviolet radiation. Because velour relies on a specific pile direction to achieve its luxurious sheen, sun damage can cause the fibers to become brittle or 'bald,' destroying the aesthetic appeal. When evaluating options, specifically seek out fabrics that are solution-dyed. Solution-dyed fabrics have color integrated into the liquid polymer before the fiber is even extruded, making them significantly more resistant to fading than surface-dyed fabrics. This ensures that your deep navy or forest green bench remains vibrant even after months of direct exposure to the afternoon sun.

Fit, Fastening, and Maintenance

A velour cover only looks premium if it fits snugly. A loose, sagging cover will look messy and collect debris in its folds. Look for covers that incorporate elasticized hems, drawstring closures, or heavy-duty Velcro straps to ensure a tailored appearance. Furthermore, consider the ease of maintenance. Because velour can trap pollen and pet hair more easily than smooth nylon, ensure the cover is machine-washable on a gentle cycle. Always check if the cover can be dried on low heat. High heat can melt the synthetic fibers that create the velour texture, permanently altering the feel of the fabric.
