A Guide to Selecting the Best American Greetings Plates
Identify the Occasion and Theme
The most critical step in selecting American Greetings plates is matching the design to your specific event. This brand is renowned for its character-driven and sentiment-heavy designs. If you are hosting a child's birthday, look for plates featuring bright colors, whimsical patterns, or celebratory motifs that evoke a sense of wonder. For more formal or seasonal gatherings—such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, or Mother's Day—opt for the sophisticated botanical or classic holiday patterns. Selecting a plate that aligns with your theme reduces the need for extensive extra decorations, as the plate itself becomes a centerpiece of the table setting.
Evaluate Material Durability and Weight
Not all paper plates are created equal. When browsing the selection, consider the 'heaviness' of the plate. For events where you are serving heavy foods like lasagna, thick slices of cake, or hearty appetizers, you will want to look for premium, heavy-duty paper options. Thinner, lightweight plates are excellent for snacks or light finger foods but can buckle under the weight of a full meal, leading to spills and frustration. If you are hosting an outdoor event where wind might be a factor, heavier-weight plates are much more stable and less likely to blow off the table.
Consider Size and Capacity
The utility of a plate is largely determined by its diameter. Most collections offer a variety of sizes, and a smart host will mix and match them. Standard dinner-sized plates are necessary for the main course, while smaller dessert plates are perfect for cake and treats. If you are serving a buffet-style meal, having smaller appetizer plates allows guests to sample various dishes without overloading a single surface. Always check the dimensions to ensure the plate is large enough for the specific food items you plan to serve.
Aesthetic Cohesion and Coordination
To achieve a professional-looking table, look for coordination beyond just the plate. Many American Greetings collections are designed to work in tandem with matching napkins, cups, and cutlery. While you don't necessarily need a perfectly matched set to have a beautiful table, choosing items within the same color palette or design family creates a sense of visual harmony. If you prefer a more eclectic look, you can use the plates as a 'pop' of color against neutral tablecloths and napkins, using the vibrant patterns of the plates to draw the eye.
Quantity and Bulk Planning
Finally, always calculate your guest count with a buffer in mind. It is a common mistake to buy exactly enough plates for the number of invitees. Between accidental drops, multiple servings, and guests who might want a fresh plate for dessert, having an extra 10-15% of your required quantity is a wise strategy. Check the pack counts carefully to ensure you aren't left short-handed mid-celebration, especially when dealing with specific themed designs that may be difficult to restock quickly.

Quick answers about American Greetings Plates before you buy.
Most high-quality ceramic and stoneware greeting plates are microwave-safe, but always check the manufacturer's specific labeling to avoid cracking or overheating.
While many modern designs are dishwasher-safe, hand-washing is highly recommended for plates with gold leaf, metallic accents, or intricate hand-painted details to prevent fading.
Stoneware is thicker and more durable, making it ideal for casual daily use, whereas porcelain is finer, more delicate, and often used for formal dining or display.
Look for high-fired stoneware or tempered glass options if you plan on using them daily. Lightweight fine china is more prone to chipping during frequent handling.
Yes, reputable American-made plates use lead-free and non-toxic glazes, but you should always verify that the product description explicitly states it is food-safe.
Choose sets with a uniform rim design and consistent thickness. Irregular hand-thrown pottery may stack less efficiently than factory-pressed ceramic sets.
High-quality underglaze techniques ensure colors stay vibrant for years, whereas overglaze decorations may wear down over time with heavy washing and use.
