Perennial lupine can grow wild or in your flower bed in USDA zones 3 - 9. Lupinus perennis, or simply Lupine, is a well-known and loved perennial wild flower. They bring interest and beauty to any naturalized landscape setting, and they fixate nitrogen for the soil.
Wild blue lupine can reach heights of 36 inches and deer tend to stay away. They’re beneficial in many ways! Lupines have very attractive, shrub-like deep green foliage and tall erect stems that tower above the foliage. Lupine is an early summer bloomer and very attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds.
Lupine is an early summer bloomer and very attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds. They produce a taproot, so after the first year of getting established, they are fairly drought tolerant and need water only during periods of prolonged drought.
Many gardeners recommend soaking the seed in water for 24 hours before planting to soften the seed coat. Start the seeds indoors 6 – 8 weeks before the end of frost season. Press the seed into the soil and very lightly cover with soil. Keep the seed moist continuously. With a temperature of 68F, germination is usually within 14 days.
Plant these open pollinated, heirloom, non gmo seeds at 1 pound per 1,000 square feet or 40 pounds per acre. Transplant outdoors after danger of frost has passed. Space the plants 18 - 24 inches apart. For areas with a long growing season, the seed can be started directly outdoors in a prepared seedbed after danger of frost as passed. Grow in full sun to partial shade and in well-drained soil.

Exotic white flowers with yellow and purple-blue markings burst from stalks amid stiff, iris-like, evergreen foliage. Profuse bloomer; blooms last only one day but are quickly replaced. Fire resistant.
Tap into the beauty of drought-tolerant African iris. A cousin to bearded iris, Siberian iris and the rest of the iris flower clan, African iris is a native of South Africa. Botanically it’s known as Dietes bicolor. In common parlance, African iris is also called fortnight lily, yellow fortnight lily and butterfly flag.
The name fortnight lily refers to the plant’s habit of flowering from spring through fall. African iris produces a smattering of blooms in each clump of leaves roughly every two weeks. Each blossom lasts only one day, but because stems appear about every 14 days, the flower show is strong and steady.
Butterfly flag is another name of African iris, which refers to the plant’s lovely blooms that float and hover above the leafy clumps like butterflies. The petals on African iris flowers are pale yellow with purple markings. Blooms are fragile and appear almost like a flattened iris blossom. Snip flower stems after blooms fade to prevent self-sowing.

Prepare the soil: Choose a well-draining, sandy soil with a pH between 6.0 and 8.0. Amend the soil with compost or other organic matter if necessary to improve fertility.
Scarify the seeds: Creeping Mountain Lilac seeds have a hard outer coating that needs to be scarified or scratched to allow moisture to penetrate and germination to occur. You can scarify the seeds by rubbing them gently with sandpaper or nicking them with a small knife.
Soak the seeds: Soak the scarified seeds in water for 24-48 hours to further soften the outer coating and encourage germination.
Sow the seeds: Sow the seeds about 1/4 inch deep in a seed-starting tray or directly in the garden bed. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
Provide light and warmth: Place the seed tray in a warm, bright location such as a south-facing windowsill or under grow lights. Keep the soil temperature between 60-70°F.

SUN: Mountain laurel is highly prized because it performs well in part shade. It can tolerate full sun but the deep-green leaves may turn yellowish.
SOIL: These shrubs are like cool, moist but well-drained, acidic soil (pH 5.0 to 5.5), planters filled with a well-draining soil mix.
WATER: A newly planted mountain laurel needs watering every three to four days for the first few weeks. Give it enough water to thoroughly moisten the soil without making it soggy.
WHEN TO PLANT: Plant mountain laurel shrubs in the spring, after any danger of frost has passed, to early summer in cool, moist soil that is well-drained and acidic.
PLANTING SUGGESTIONS: This shrub should be fed in spring with an acid fertilizer, such as one formulated for azaleas and rhododendrons. Feeding will encourage more vigorous blooming.
