An open-grown live oak is a massive, picturesque, wide-spreading tree with magnificent horizontal and arching branches that form a broad, rounded canopy. A squat, tapering trunk (larger in diameter than that of any other oak) supports the huge, irregular limbs which often rest their elbows on the ground.

Dark-green, waxy, unlobed leaves fall just as new leaves emerge in the spring, making the tree appear evergreen, though the coordinated leaf loss means its not actually a true evergreen.

The species tolerates more shade in summer than most oaks because the evergreen leaves can function through most of the winter. Fairly drought tolerant once established. It grows rapidly when young and may live to be centuries old. Adapts to almost any soil. Live Oaks can be used as street trees. Tolerant of salt spray.

Place the seed into a pot of wet sand, sphagnum peat moss, or vermiculite, checking the moisture level frequently.Dampen a paper towel, seal it in a bag with the seeds, and keep it in the refrigerator for 100 days to mimic nature. WHEN & HOW TO PLANT: At any time of the year. Soak the seeds in warm water overnight, and push the seeds into the peat moss. Remain in the refrigerator for three months. Remove the seed and sprinkle a one-eighth-inch layer of sand over the seed and moisten it. Place a heat mat in an area that receives bright indirect sunlight. Set the heat mat’s thermostat to 71 degrees Fahrenheit.

COLOR & CHARACTERISTICS: Dwarf weeping cherry trees are small flowering trees in the genus Prunus. The blossoming deciduous trees have a droopy growth habit due to their soft, flexible branches. I use a mix of 1/2 peat moss and 1/2 perlite. Shallow ( 3" deep) plastic grower's trays with newspaper lining the bottom make excellent growing containers. Other have good luck with very different mixes and containers.

Sprinkle seeds on surface, they should not be completely covered. Water from beneath. If watering from above, be sure that the mist is quite fine. Seal growing area with glass or plastic, leaving plenty of room over the seeds for ventilation. Maintain a soil temperature of 70-85ºF. Bottom heat is very effective.
