A Guide to Selecting the Best frametory wall picture frames
Material Composition and Durability
The first decision in selecting a premium frame is the material. Most high-quality frames fall into three categories: wood, metal, or high-grade synthetic composites. Wood frames offer a timeless, organic warmth that works exceptionally well in traditional or farmhouse aesthetics. When choosing wood, look for solid timber or high-quality veneers rather than hollow plastic imitations, as real wood provides a weight and texture that signifies quality. Metal frames, conversely, provide a sleek, industrial, or contemporary edge. They are incredibly durable and offer much thinner profiles, which is ideal for minimalist art where you want the frame to act as a subtle border rather than a heavy distraction. Consider the weight of your art. A heavy canvas may require a sturdier metal or solid wood construction to prevent warping over time.
Matting and Visual Depth
One of the most common mistakes in home decor is choosing a frame that is too tight to the image. A mat (the cardboard border inside the frame) serves two purposes: it provides a visual 'breathing space' that draws the eye toward the subject, and it creates a physical barrier between the artwork and the glazing, preventing the art from sticking to the glass. When browsing Frametory options, pay close attention to the mat width. A wide, archival-quality mat can make a small photograph feel like a museum piece, whereas a thin mat is better suited for modern, edge-to-edge prints. Additionally, consider the depth of the frame. Shadow box styles or deep-set profiles add a three-dimensional quality to the wall, which is particularly effective for textured art or objects that require extra clearance.
Glazing Options: Protection vs. Clarity
The 'glazing' refers to the transparent layer—either glass or acrylic—that protects your art. Standard glass is heavy and can be prone to shattering, making it difficult for large-scale installations. Acrylic (often referred to as Plexiglass) is a popular alternative because it is lightweight and shatter-resistant, making it the safer choice for high-traffic areas or large gallery walls. However, not all acrylic is created equal. If you are placing your frames in a room with significant natural light, look for UV-protective glazing. This is crucial for preventing the fading of pigments in photographs and delicate watercolors. Without UV protection, even the most beautiful piece can suffer irreversible damage from sun exposure.
Aesthetic Cohesion and Mounting
When building a collection, you must decide between a cohesive look and a curated eclectic look. A cohesive approach uses identical frames and mat colors to create a sense of order and calm, which is perfect for hallways or formal dining rooms. An eclectic approach mixes different frame textures and colors, which works best in creative spaces or 'maximalist' living rooms. Finally, consider the mounting hardware. Ensure the frames come with versatile hanging systems—such as sawtooth hangers or wire kits—that allow for both vertical and horizontal orientation. This flexibility is essential as your collection grows and your layout needs evolve.

Quick answers about Frametory Wall Picture Frames before you buy.
Real wood frames offer superior durability and a unique grain pattern, whereas MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) is more budget-friendly and provides a perfectly smooth, consistent surface for painted finishes.
Glass is scratch-resistant and offers better clarity for long-term displays, while acrylic is lightweight and shatterproof, making it the safer choice for high-traffic areas or large-scale installations.
For bathrooms or kitchens, we recommend choosing metal frames or high-quality acrylic, as moisture can cause wooden frames to warp or paper backings to swell over time.
A mat prevents the artwork from touching the glass, which protects it from moisture buildup, and it adds visual depth and a sophisticated aesthetic to your display.
Look for frames equipped with integrated hanging hardware like sawtooth hangers or wire kits, which allow for more precise leveling and easier installation.
Most high-quality frames are designed with versatile mounting hardware that allows you to rotate the frame for either portrait or landscape orientation.
Use a soft, lint-free microfiber cloth to wipe away dust. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, especially on wood or specialized finishes, as they can strip the protective coating.
