Johnny jumps ups are a perennial, low growing wildflower seed grown in USDA Zones 3 - 9. This low growing violet only reaches 6 inches tall.

Sunny areas may be too hot in southern climates, while shady areas may be too cold in northern zones. Depending on your temperature zone, these wildflowers may grow in full sun to full shade. Trimming Johnny Jump-ups back in the heat of summer will encourage another flush of blooms in the fall.

🌱 Direct sow in spring, planting just below the surface of the soil. Keep the soil lightly moist until germination, which usually occurs within 1-2 weeks. This plant can also be started indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost of spring.

💦 Water seedlings occasionally until they become established. Mature plants do fairly well in drought, though they adapt to well-drained moist soil. These plants are also tolerant of both heat and cold. It also grows well in rocky or sandy soil. This plant readily reseeds itself.

Pansy seeds are fairly difficult to germinate and require very specific conditions. However, with the proper attention they can be grown successfully from seed. It is best to put your seeds in the refrigerator for several days before starting them. You will want to start your seed at a fairly cool temperature, 60F to 65F. Sprinkle your seeds onto your starting mix, then sprinkle more mix over the seeds to cover with about 1/8" of soil- they need to be covered- and place them in a dark room.

Depth: DO NOT COVER but press into soil! SOIL temperature MUST be kept at 70F for proper germination!!! Cool soil, particularly at night can inhibit or significantly delay germination. Overly warm soils, well above 90F, can inhibit germination and provide ideal conditions for seed rot.

To keep soil temperature warm, start seeds indoors. Keep the container covered with a plastic bag on the top of the fridge where the room temperature is higher, therefore the soil temperature is good for germination.
