Best Shad Fishing Soft Plastic Lures in 2026

Most anglers settle for subtle surface ripples that predators often ignore, but the Berkley Choppo creates the kind of violent, explosive disturbance that demands an immediate strike. I was particularly impressed by how the cupped propeller tail maintains its shape even in a hot tackle box, providing a massive amount of spray and sound regardless of how fast you retrieve it. The 105mm body is perfectly balanced, allowing you to wind it through heavy cover or pull it straight through open water without losing that signature waking action. Even when I slowed my cadence, the enhanced surface area kept the commotion going. To top it off, the integrated Fusion19 hooks are incredibly sharp, ensuring that those frantic topwater blowouts actually result in a landed fish rather than a missed opportunity.

A quiet morning on the lake turns into a flurry of activity the moment you drop this pearl white Baby Shad into the water. The design strikes an incredible balance between a plump, deep-bellied profile and a thin, spear-like tail that refuses to stay still. Even when I held the bait in my hand, the tail kept dancing, which is exactly the kind of irresistible action that draws in crappie and other game fish. It is easy to see why tournament anglers have relied on this specific 2-inch profile for years. The soft plastic construction feels durable enough to survive multiple strikes, making this 18-count pack a reliable staple for any tackle box when you need consistent, high-action movement.

Bass anglers chasing heavy pressure need the Gary Yamamoto Zako in their tackle box to bridge the gap between subtle movement and aggressive action. Designed alongside B.A.S.S. Elite Series Pro Brett Hite, this 4-inch swimbait excels as a chatterbait trailer or a versatile jig component. The accordion-style tail and flanged fins create a tight, realistic vibration that mimics bluegill or shad with every twitch. I found the segmented design particularly helpful for rigging. The molded-in belly slit and back groove ensure your hook stays perfectly aligned, while the top center line makes dead-center rigging a breeze. Whether you are flipping into heavy cover using the split-belly for weedless setups or gliding through open water, the Zako runs true and delivers a high-performance profile that predators find hard to ignore.
